The extra charge for the second guest is clearly stated for every rate type on the website. 15 EUR for rates without breakfast and 35 EUR for rates with breakfast. It could not be clearer. The price difference between rooms with one bed and two beads was also known to you, I have some difficulties to understand what you are complaining about

For tourists, Kimpton is better situated.
Amstel is a far superior (and far more expensive) hotel. Very pricey even for an IC. No Club Lounge, a minus for RAs.

They offer the club life experience which is to my belief better than tons of drinks in a RA ghetto.

Amstel is absolutely beautiful, it is a bit of a walk to the centre but still nothing bad, Mrs Lewis42 and I enjoyed the walk around each day.

Being a RA and experiencing the club life experience was fabulous.

If you want a kinda romantic relaxing weekend, go to the Amstel.

If you want a more upbeat, lively weekend, go to the Kimpton.

I would choose the Amstel Hotel. As @Lewis42 said it is a nice walk, especially if you walk along the Amstel river. The location is not that bad, the nearby tube station (1 minute walk) takes you to Central Station in 5 minutes (3 stops). The tramlines take you to Museumplein (Museum Square), also only 3 stops.

Thanks for the advice upthread. I ended up staying at the De Witt over the Ren and feel that I made the correct choice. An overview of my stay and impressions are posted here.

Here's a few photos of the Studio King With Terrance room I was assigned:

Living area; note the open closet space to hang clothes between the mirrors and wall to the right.

King bed was very comfortable

Cozy bathroom with spacious shower

Terrace is adjacent to living area

Terrace seating and table

View from the terrace

It does - though obviously less fancy than the Amstel. The best thing about breakfast in the Amstel is the view (which you also get from the pool) right out over the river. I don't think the breakfast in the hotel is worth it, though happy to have it as part of the ClubLife package.
