can i book and cancel a room ,will that keep my pts account from losing pts , my 1 yr is in july and prob wont use them by then.

i)whilst elite gold - spire, points don't expire
ii)don't expire 12months period you drop to not having elite status (ie 1st Jan 20xx)
iii)if no elite status points balance expires 12months after no account balance acrtivity , ie earning or spending points
iv)booking a paid night (adr/flex) for a future date is no good as points only earn post stay by whuch time your acct zeroes out
v)booking award night is a points balance activity. however if you later cancel award the points will be then zeroed
(Since Jan/Feb2018 t+c updates, ie to specifically say booking + latercancelling award night will not count and points will not extend points life)

Your Options
i)book+use cheap points night eg Pointsbreak at 5k or cheap hotel at 15k
ii)book+stay cheap cash rate
or cheapest usually
iii)use points to buy a vert cheap ebook, sometimes can be found < 100points
iv)buy 1k points for usd13 or so
