Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

So, some nights sacrificed in favour of reaching 30 IC nights.

She put on her Supervisor, as I was still was stonewalled much like yourself despite me using the "I have 6 hours to go til 01st of November" so I asked them to make a reference that the earlier agent had counted 70/30/10+ from the 14th of October 2015.

That's the only thing the Supervisor agreed to do. She then went on to say "Customers cannot demand Royal Ambassador be given to them". I had not demanded it - but I had mentioned other datapoints showing lesser amounts had requalified before being repeated advised that there was no more news to go and for me to wait til 01st January.
You need to hit both targets total nights, IHG nights (75) and IC Brand Nights (30), which are new minimums since March2016.

You have not met both targets so will not be considerd for RA status or getting RA status

However maybe not all is lost, as 365 rolling period can span Ambassador years, so a bunch of IC nights early Nov2016 before nights inNOV2015 drop off could get you to 75+/30+/3+

75/30/3 does not guarantee RA however it is just a minimum requirement, and in fact an Ambassador with 77/75/3 just posted that he was refused by Supervisors, although with those 77nights in just first 8months of his Amb year, his counts can easily be increased over the next 4 months Nov-Feb inclusive

Maybe they are not awarding upgrades to RA for anyone until the new criteria are settled? Maybe they are aligning a whole number of us with an end date at the end of December too so that they can do a single IT query run to extract whatever the data chosen this quarter is going to be?

Not like only cheap IC hotels stayed at, as you mentioned just two main IC's, IC Paris Le Grand that must have been at least 300usd/night, and Melbourne IC is not cheap either. Remaining 2nights at IC O2 London would possibly be cheapest (due to GBP collapse) but thats only 2nights and again not one of the budget IC's.

On the upside, you have 4months of your Mar2016-Feb2017 Ambassador left, so clocking up more nights is possible and I am sure RAstatus will be yours sooner than later. Unfortunately it is the hidden/opaque nature of re RA goal that alienates those such as yourself from trying to become RA in the first place.

nb
Out of interest what is your usd IC spend for the 75nights (net excluding taxes).
Hey,

Re- The USD spend ,

Well I can't really remember the exact figures but I know the fact that minimum per night for IC MEL that I paid was 173 USD excl tax and fees (as you know Le Grand would be much more).

USD173x75 nights= 12975USD at a very minimum! ( I am being really conservation re FX as well ).

I will be in Tokyo in Nov and already booked 2 nights at IC Tokyo Bay. Hopefully I will get closer!

( I have a feeling it will be 80/30/3 for newbies like me!)

Cheers!

When I initially posted my first query and data point, which was not even half a month ago, there was no set goalpost as yet. I even had 80 nights IHG and some were suggesting to add a further three IC nights at that point. Obviously, everything discussed since then was just an educated guess or speculation at best.

The only thing that changed since then was someone at the Ambassador desk was helpful and proactive enough to bother looking through to see and suggest what they thought would be the optimal balance of IHG/IC nights to consider (in this case, with a bias given towards IC nights, if there was such a thing). That was when they suggested making a data point for a rolling 365 days from the 14th Oct '15 to 13th Oct '16. Everything prior to the 14th Oct '15 and everything after the 13th Oct '16 would skew the data point in another direction, which again begs the question if 30 IC nights was only ever our own speculation, in which case I should have added another 3 IC nights and used that as the basis for requalification with an end-Oct deadline. I could easily have added 5 more nights, or 3 more IC nights but not knowing where the goalpost lies led to this debacle in the first place.

Whatever happens next, I believe that IHG moving the goalpost and the requalification date should not count against me. If they think my 70-75/27-30/10+ business lacks RA merit for 2017, I'll give them one last piece of my mind before I shift me and my family's hotel focus for the last 4 years elsewhere. In fact, I'll make certain now to send my next 16 stays over to SPG until the end of the year. A pity indeed as I was so looking forward to my first IHG jaunt all over the Middle East in the last 10 days of November.

I'm done playing silly games with IHG. I'm sure Hyatt/SPG will welcome me just as warmly into/back to their fold. I'm sure regardless, if I do stay at my most frequent property in IC BKK, whom I'm on a first name basis with most of their managers, my family and I will still be very well looked after. Otherwise the Hyatt is just 90 meters away.

You've just about doubled my qualifying, so I'm pretty sure you made it

I think this post strengthens the supposition that everyone who got the short extension to the end of 2016 will be extended RA for all of 2017. Unless of course you subscribe to the theory that only IC nights will count in the future.

My RA-Spire card shows Ambassador exp 11/1/16, but online still showing as RA. It would be nice to do a few more IC nights before the end of the calendar year, if I'm still RA, since I won't (shouldn't) have RA going forward, unless 92 total nights, 10 of which are IC's, works. Doubt it.

the online status is the accurate one.

a number of members had their accounts augmented with a few months as compensation for late RA packs.

you can give them a call to confirm, but you are still RA ^

Both. You can ask them to renew now and it's too early for them to follow your request.

These days the (re-)qualification for Royal Ambassador is more a test of stamina and tolerance for suffering.

Currently sitting with 72/46/7, usually staying at Suites so must have spent quite a lot. Even though I'm not sure it's worth calling the CS team given that many people above weren't successful with 100+ nights on their account. Would be great to have a better understanding on what the RA qualifying criteria actually is.

They are changing the program. That means they have to do some work.

Before they often let their customers wait without any reason. Now they have a good reason. You should be RA until end of December. From IHG's point of view there is no need for your requalification before December or maybe January.

If you want or need transparency about the conditions of your bookings, the RA is definetly the wrong program for you. If you order a car and you don't care if you will get a Spark or a Corvette for your money, then you match perfectly.
