Extending Diamond status by purchasing Ambassador?

I am reporting back of my experience.
Today my Spire expires on 31st December 2019 according to the app. I renewed my Ambassador membership, few minutes later I checked the app again and the Spire expiration date is changed to 31st December 2020.
I have qualified for Spire every year since they introduced the level and have renewed my Ambassador every year. So the extend Spire for one more year by renewing Ambassador works for me so far.

My spire is still there with a 12/31/18 expiry date. I wonder what happens if I add Ambassador now while the system is in flux. May be a better use of my 85k points than hunting for a room as I’m not using IHG much since they absorbed Kimpton and all but killed the IC experience I had loved for 10+ years.

However I don't know what happens if you did not re-qualify Spire by normal means and extend your Ambassador membership...that still needs someone else to report back.

I was spire inner circle having come over from Kimpton but wasn’t using IHG that much and was going to drop to gold. It seemed a reasonable use of points to try out Ambassador as my 3-4 Intercontinental stays are paid for by a client.

The 25K Spire bonus is specifically linked to the activity counter when it registers enough points or nights to qualify!
