Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

Hoping to make RA by the end of the year if they allow new members. Currently, diamond Ambassador.

As of today, 81 nights overall with IHG.
57 in ICs but a mix of points stays and paid, I bought points at 0.05 cents to save some money.
9 different ICs in Asia, Europe and NA.

Not sure how to read the points thing but I'm at about 82k points for the requalifying meter on the app.

I will be staying at more ICs for the rest of the year but I got caught up in the Hyatt Bilt Promo and since I made Globalist, I shifted a bunch of my future nights to Hyatts.

i believe they're upped the hurdle to USD12K consistent with the Diamond hurdle, paid nights, point nights don't count. look to hit 120K qualifying points by year end, and you should be good.

If only paid IC nights count, I'm probably not going to make it. I'm only at 22 nights paid for ICs and 39 nights on points. As of now, I have 19 more paid IC stays booked coming up, which takes me to 41 paid nights. I have 8 more point nights at ICs too. Then I'll be 41 paid, 47 points, 88 total.

I just bought more points at the 100% bonus so I'm not going to pay for more IC nights unless it's a better deal than the points. I switched a bunch of stays to Hyatt because of the Bilt Promo and so far having really good luck with suite upgrades as a Globalist. But to be fair, as a Diamond, I always got good upgrades too, not at ICs which give the standard 1 category but if I stay at a Holiday Inn, they upgrade me to the 1 bedroom suite from the standard room and at a HIX, they give me the extended room.

With my situation, we will have comparison points with a higher spend (180k qualifying points so far at ICs) but a much more focused pattern (3 ICs visited) at the end of the year. But all of this will be moot if they don't allow new members in.

I gave up chasing RA and take my business elsewhere because there is no clear criteria. I like most (many) ICs, but don't stay at the mediorcre ones any more. I still easily will make Diamond again, but so far this year I was staying somewhere else for almost 20 nights and likely will be between 30 and 40 at yearend. Ic would have gotten this revenue if they had a clearly communicated threshold for RA.

I have similar feelings too. I have already hit the 120K elite points to retain Diamond for the coming year. However, not too sure if I would meet the criteria to retain RA as my travel takes me to Taipei and BKK often for 1H of this year where there are virtually no ICs around. I had stayed at Regent and Kimpton hotels in these cities. AMB helpdesk shared with me that they should take Regent and Kimpton spendings into consideration during evaluation, but this may change nearer to the date.

Any particular hotel program that I should be looking out for now, in particular, if I can do a status match. Starting from base membership is going to be tough as I would need some of the perks such as late check out, etc. Thanks for sharing your insights.

Go with Hyatt. I’ve not been more impressed with a programme in a while. They treat their elites right, and they generally make you feel like your status is well earned. The upgrades and other benefits are clear, as well, and hotels usually don’t play games with them (outside of North Ameirca). And the requalification criteria are CLEAR. :P

Clarity is very important, it's a shame that IHG doesn't see this. Sure, it allows people to game the system (and spend, say, exactly 1 dollar above the threshold to get the maximum benefits) but I feel these situations are few (we're talking about significant supposed spending anyway). And the drawback, as you mentionned, is that there is little point in actually going out of your way to stay loyal to a chain if you don't know if it will be useful.

Yup. This thread has been going on for 7 years and with a brief exception period, that has been the #1 complaint by people. I mean if I had to choose unlimited minibar or clear requalification criteria, I would actually take the criteria!! Not that anyone asked. :P

Be aware that IHG might not grant RA even if "criteria" are met,
corporate has a tendency to look at overrall multiple years of tenure & devotion at IC hotels
and in some lesser degree to all IHG hotels.

I read on VFTW sometime back that the RA pool was to be culled and not expanded:

https://viewfromthewing.com/better-u...ewards-guests/

Quote from the thoughtleader's talk with IHG:
Furthermore the Royal Ambassador and and Kimpton Inner Circle groups
“have gotten very big, even apart from Covid”
and that’s made it challenging to deliver benefits.
So they’re evaluating the size and benefits of their invite-only tier

One would be rather better off with Hyatt:Globalist
The smallest group chain that needs to compensate its smaller footprint with very generous benefits.
But it can only work if there are Hyatt hotels that fit your travel patterns ....

Would love to go with Hyatt but their limited footprint really does not work for me. At least with IHG I can turn my small town Holiday Inn nights into nice stays at ICs with the wife under the same program. But am going to try Hyatt where I can in the coming months.

Personally,
i would need to evaluate if RA is possible to achieve,
if:

- IC AMS transforms into Regent or leaves IHG

No suitable luxury alternatives in Amsterdam:
- Waldorf Astoria-AMS is unpredictable in roomsizes
(would be defeatist battle tackling American HG Diamond Aspire cardholders for upgrades)
- Andaz is just weird in design
- Okura is old junk
- Hilton Amsterdam is old junk
- Hotel 27 feels boxed in
- Conservatorium hotel is hypist modern
- Hyatt Regency = one cannot entertain there
- Sofitel LeGrand is nice but a disaster in accesability to entertain

- IC Bali Jimbaran leaves IHG
Only alternative in Jimbaran:
- Belmond (direct access to the beach)
- FS (bit of resort factory at a very high price)
Although Sanur/NusaDua might be an option, deffo not Kuta/Seminyak/Canggu

IHG Diamond is easier to achieve:
Instead of IC Parklane > Kimpton Fitzroy
Instead of IC AMS > Kimpton Amsterdam (Terrace Room/Penthouse)

Why Hyatt needs to sway guests with Globalist benefits to compensate for locations/limited footprint?
OMAAT hypes Hyatt Regency Dusseldorf but it is just to far from Dusseldorf old town or Hbf main railway station,
He prefers to go all out the boondocks because of the Globalist benefits,
https://onemileatatime.com/hyatt-reg...eldorf-review/

I -as any sane person- prefers just to walkout exiting my chosen hotel and be right where i need to be,
IHG serves me the best in that regard.

Some might be better off with other chains that could provide better lucrative benefits in programs,
but you might need to be willing to travel futher distances
and you need to compete with a much larger pool of guests with easy high status (Hilton/Marriott/Hyatt: creditcards/promos)

Other cities though can offer a lot of alternatives (of other chains):
Paris (admittingly IC PLG is S/O's only choice as he proposed there)
Bangkok (oodles of luxury hotels)
Singapore (similair)
New York (similair but expensive)
Miami (similair but rates yoyo due to cruise season)

I must say I love the Conservatorium for interior design by Piero Lissoni and location (not cheap still, and indoor pool is far behind the one at Amstel)

Sofitel building is nice but the interior design is more like that of a (comfortable) Mercure than a 600-euro-a-night hotel.

What about Pestana, hotel 717, Pulitzer (no more part of Marriott since quite some time), Hotel V Fredericksplein, Hotel Mercier, Sir Albert, the Dylan, the Hoxton or Soho House?

Apologies folks ... this is a lazy ask as I've not been on FT with any frequency for a while and indeed not been making many stays to date.

So I'm a bit 'bench bound' rather than 'match fit' and could do with a quick heads up on basic RA hit targets.

I think I'm right in saying that 'point nights' count now towards RA nights totals? Just to confirm please if that's the case.

Also the spend total I think Tim said was £12k? That I'm on target for if it's the case even on the low number of nights to date which have ironically been expensive ones at prime times.

Another question I should be clear on but having been on the dark side, I could use some guidance on .... do Kimpton nights count towards RA renewal. Apols I'm sure I've asked that before.

Would be a big help to get some catch up guidance. Many thanks

From my understanding points nights do not count and spending has to be at an Intercontinental ( Kimpton and Regent no longer count, sadly)
