Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

congrats! I still have not heard back from IHG yet after spending another $2.8k at IC before the end of the year since receiving the downgrade email.

ihg did not even have a record of my IC stays over Christmas till I gave them my confirmation number. Guest relations did confirm they have on record I spent $26k at 17 different IC this year though. They also confirmed Kimpton and Regent spend is not accounted for when considering RA invitation.

Nothing new after downgrade really other than a short stay of a few hundred usd posted + a few new bookings (incl prepaid after dealing with hotel diredtly for perks, points, and some club/suite+)..

Manual review totalled about 1K less than my excel, but I guess its just further miscalc in the rush.

The IHG strategy of sending high spending, frequent guests to Hilton, Bonvoy etc, saying goodbye to $20K revenue on behalf of hotels it manages,is indeed bizarre.

Do the hotels get a say in this? My experience is that hotels will continue to offer RA equivalence to guests they recognise, but it's an uncomfortable position to be in.

The hope seems to be that those kicked out will be grateful for the $200 Ambassador membership as reward for their loyalty.....and continue to stay at IC's with no lounge, no breakfast, no meaningful upgrades, just a weird $20 credit, in the hope of regaining lost status.

Well, I guess it is a strategy: but who on earth dreamt it up

My 2020 RA renewal experience so far:
- I got the 'downgrade' email on 23 Dec putting me back to normal Ambassador (1 year comp).
- Called them (Ambassador call centre) today to query given I did 99 nights last year of which 80% were expensive places (ie SG).
- I was told that the email of the 23 Dec was a system automated email that went out to ALL RA members as their renewals were "still in review" (ie I pushed on this a bit and couldn't get a clear comment, but it sounded like there was some automated email technical mistake, they just didn't want to say that in words to me).
- There is a "new email" going out to all RA members on or before 6 of Jan to confirm their 2020 RA status.

All sounded a bit odd, not sure if I was just being fobbed off. However I'll await with excitement until the end of today.

In my case I need to get RA, for me and a couple of my team, as this makes the difference on cost for my company to approve using Intercons.

The saga isn't over!

you would have guessed they would finish reviewing accounts before the new year and avoid uncertainty

when you got the downgrade email, was there downgrade notification in the activity? And in the app does it still show Royal exp 31 Dec 2019 or does it say Spire Exp 31 dec 2020?

So for 3 years in a row, they managed to screw up the mailing to their 1% top guests.

Two second time a screw up of this level was hilarious. Third time is just pathetic.

The email simply said :
"It’s been a pleasure to have you as a Royal Ambassador member in 2019. Based on your recent level of activity at InterContinental® Hotels & Resorts, unfortunately we are unable to extend an invitation to Royal Ambassador for 2020.

You remain a highly valued guest and, as a thank you for your loyalty, we would like to welcome you to a complimentary year of Spire Ambassador status."

My IHG app still shows my member card as RA with Dec 2019 expiry. So it's maybe still 'under consideration'.

... not received today's mythical email yet... although I think I did see a unicorn walking down my street earlier... couldn't be sure as I was distracted by a flying pig.

I am contemplating just pay the $450 to get the hilton card and get their diamond, and start sending some of my businesses over there ... since RA is so secretively without any criteria to follow basically a hit/miss ... benefit wise no wow factor at all.

yes same as last year.

2019 was first year for free RA night IIRC.

and if US domiciled, if you had the legacy Chase" Select" card, with the USD49 annual fee, you get a free night annually,

and the "Premier" USD89 annual fee, free annual night.

so four free nights annually.

congratulations, always worth pursuing....

ihg did not even have a record of my IC stays over Christmas till I gave them my confirmation number. Guest relations did confirm they have on record I spent $26k at 17 different IC this year though. They also confirmed Kimpton and Regent spend is not accounted for when considering RA invitation.
That is wrong, the email i posted down thread from person running the program states spend at IC, Kimpton, and Regents count.

thanks for clarifying, last year i got the paper AMB certificate and there was a digital free night in my account.
i think i booked the digital free night online via the app whilest surrendering at check in the paper certificate so that's why confused about the amount of free nights. It is also a revelation for me that both credit cards come with stackable free nights, i've been missing out!

I called guest relations to send me a list of the hotel stays I had this year so I know they did the count correctly for RA. I asked for IC/Kimpton/Regent stays and they said they will only send me IC stays because Kimpton and Regent don’t count. They only count for the $5000usd spend challenge towards the end of the year.
