Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

Right. Will try that if I get RA status. For those of you who’ve made the cut in the past, when do they typically inform you that you’ve made the cut? In Dec? In Jan? I ask because I have another 10 or so nights at ICs in Dec and am wondering if I may be lucky enough to get it by then...

There is no guarantee at all, no matter which number of spend, that you will get RA. Proof of this can be found in the last renewal session.

I do not wish to open a new thread on RA qualification and as such, I am posting this promotion that I came across recently.

There is currently a promotion for IHG Greater China members, where if they register for the promotion and spend USD5K from now till end of the year, they will be upgraded to IC Royal Ambassador member.

Registration link:
https://www.ihg.com.cn/rewardsclub/c...fferCode=60813

Details are available in the website in Chinese:
https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/9yuB0krpBNgVW0231Y92bQ

Details of the promotion in English
https://amb.ihggccampaign.com/amb90d...html?mediaid=8

Unfortunately, this promotion is not open to members not residing in Greater China. I have a friend who is residing in Taiwan and successfully registered, but a friend who is here in Singapore was not able to register.

This promotion can be upsetting for existing RA members who need to clock more than USD10K to get the RA status, where for those residing in Greater China region, you can register and get the RA membership with just USD5K spent within the next 2 months.

One interesting data point from this promotion is that the qualifying spend can be made in Regent, Kimpton hotels, in addition to IC hotels. This may be a give-away sign that spent in Regent, Kimpton hotels may be taken in consideration for evaluation of IC RA status next year.

I was told months ago by someone in the know that yes Regent and Kimpton spend WILL count towards RA qualification for 2019. Not that it has gotten me to move any spend to those properties, but it is good to know that it would count.

Having to spend USD5,000 in 2 months is considered a "fast track"? Yikes.

I doubt there would be many RAs who would be particularly upset by this. Also, with all the changes in the past few years (and particularly this year) I'm not sure many will find it a worthwhile venture.

This is actually a pretty good point. I got angry at first, then I realised that if I could redirect $5K of spend to IHG in two months, I'd probably be able to keep that up through the rest of the year as well, so that'd be a fair RA upgrade, most likely.

5k USD is not really a lot if you are booking suites. Not every customer is working on base rooms and hoping for a meaningless upgrade. I know several friends of mine using status as a great opportunity to get the suite they would book anyway for a discounted price. This is my approach to. I probably spend 30k a year and receive value of 60k.

Sure, but I would have thought that far more people are just about making the cut rather than dropping $30k per year without breaking a sweat.

In that context of c. $10k being the spend requirement that most people are working towards, it's hardly any kind of special concession to be required to spend half of that in 1/6 of the time.

Yes. 5k is pretty easy to hit especially in cities like Amsterdam, London and Paris. You need 10-14 nights. For someone like me who spends 25-30 k a year, honestly I feel shortchanged that they offer a deal like this
