Newbie need help ☺️
Hi there guys, I do have a few questions, and hope you guys can help.
I just enrolled on the chase sapphire preferred credit card so I could purchase the tickets for the next family trip. So I have no points there.
My UA points doesn’t seem to help, or the points we have on the United card, (star alliance) which sums up about 185k points. We are leaving that to rest for now.
Anyways… For my surprise, as we run through chase portal today; the difference between the flights is coming close to $800 more compared to Skyscanner 😳
Am I doing something wrong? Skyscanner is MUCH cheaper, and the hassle to buy through the portal doesn’t seem worth it in this case 😩.
I really want to book the flight asap because it was a good deal that came up today, and prices are going up… What do you guys think?

With your Sapphire Preferred card, you can purchase airline tickets through any travel agency or airline that accepts Visa cards; you are not required to purchase your tickets via the Chase travel portal. You would earn more Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent if you booked through the Chase portal, but if fares are much higher through the portal, then it will not pay to book there for this particular trip.
If you can get the Skyscanner price by booking directly with the airline, I would suggest that you do so. In the event that something goes wrong with the trip, it is (usually) easier to deal directly with the airline than with a travel agency.
