Worried regarding flight connection
Hi all,
New to this site and thanks in advance for any advice/guidance.
Basically have a Lufthansa booking from LHR to FRA in a few weeks time. Scheduled to arrive there at 9am. Have also made a booking with Singapore airlines leaving Frankfurt at 12.30pm bound for Singapore. These are two separate bookings made directly with the respective airlines.
Just getting a little worried with all these cancellations recently. I have a few questions if anyone can shed some light on them, I'd be very grateful...
1. Suppose the LHR-FRA gets delayed / cancelled so that we cant make the SIA flight... What happens? Do they just put us on the next flight to Singapore? If so, would there be a fee? I've tried to call them, but not getting any straight answers...
2. Is it safer just to rebook the LHR-FRA flight for the night before or just continue with the original plan and hope for the best?
3. If the connection at FRA is missed and the airlines wipe their hands, is this something that travel insurance would generally cover?
Any advice would be much welcomed and appreciated. Thanks.
Nick

What happens will depend on SQ ticket t&c's. If a cheap SQ ticket be prepared to buy a new ticket at walk up rates.

Welcome to FT!
1) When on separate tickets and you miss the SQ flight, most likely SQ will ask you to rebook the ticket (to any day you wish), i.e. you have to pay change fee and fare difference. I doubt SQ will take pity on you and rebook for free.
2) When traveling during these times with a lot of disruptions etc 3 hours at FRA is a bit tight. BUT unless your flight from LHR is seriously late, you should be able to make it to the SQ check-in counters at FRA in time. Which flight are we walking about? Have you checked how much delayed the flight from LHR is on average? If it was me and the LHR-FRA already booked, I think I would take the chance rather than trying to rebook.
3) It depends on the terms of your travel insurance. My travel insurance would cover it (I guess) with 3 hours at FRA even when on separate ticket, but you need to check the terms of your own travel insurance.

That's really helpful, thanks so much!
I'll call T.I. first and if they say it's all cool, I'll take the risk!!
If not, probably safer to rebook for the day before.. rather have some peace of mind at the start of the holiday!!!
The first SQ person I spoke to said to said don't worry, we will put you on the next flight! I didn't trust her so I called again and the person said I'd have to pay a hefty no show penalty and any rebooking difference (like you say!)...
I'll email them and see if I can get anything in writing.
Thanks for your advice!! 👍🏽

There is no point in calling or writing SQ about this; it is not the decision of anyone replying to emails in Customer Service to make that decision. It will be decided at FRA when you turn up too late for check-in or having missed the flight completely. Then the SQ staff at FRA will decide if an exeption can be made to rebook you for free. You are not going to be able to rely on what a you have been told by SQ CS on the phone or in writing, sorry.

Another thing - would I be able to get baggage checked through all the way from LHR to SIN? I think they're both on Star Alliance albeit separate bookings. I once read somewhere that there is such agreement in place, but can't seem to find it now!

Just spoke to travel insurance who were very reassuring...they said it would be covered if we missed the flight due to delays etc.
I guess I'll take the risk!! Cheers

When you ask, it's helpful to have printed hard copies of both tickets (receipts showing ticket numbers) and both reservations (aka PNRs) to hand to the agent.

Spot on! I would say that it is almost required (at least card copy of the second ticket/e-ticket receipt).
