Mostly Economy, I would imagine. She will generally not check a bag if she has to pay for it, except for the first trip out.
She's not expecting much, just basic benefits such as avoiding the general public lines, possible standby privileges, avoiding involuntary bumps, and more consideration during IROPs.
EWR is equally as convenient as JFK. Won't 4 RTs get her ~32K status miles? I don't really know much about Star elite qualification.

1. Heidelberg is roughly equidistant from Frankfurt and Stuttgart, and the Stuttgart airport is much smaller than Frankfurt and more user-friendly. As far as I can see, there are no STR-NYC non-stops at the present time, but United flew STR-EWR before the pandemic and could resume doing so at some point.
2. In my experience, transatlantic flights in economy class allow for one free checked bag.

Those times are long gone. Pretty much every carrier flying transatlantic has a fare class without a free checked bag: UA and DL call it basic economy, LH refers to it as economy light, BA sells HBO (=hand-baggage only) fares etc.

If SQ ever restarts SIN-FRA-JFK that’s the best FRA-JFK option. In terms of where to credit, United or LH are probably the best options depending on fare class.
