While I've never sold a res, I have changed the name on many hotel reservation, as when my Thai GF went to get her visa, they insisted on her name being on the res. Also, you can add a name, and specify that perosn to check in, as I frequently have done that as well with a variety of different hotels, from a variety of different booking sources. I've heard sales by or to others where there was a special rate or high occupancy situation.

If you add a random person's name to your hotel reservation, you could be responsible for nonpayment or damage to the room. OTOH, you could go to the front desk and get a key card, enter the room in the other person's absence, and take what you want. It's not a good idea for either person unless you know each other well.
