Where should we go this August?

We are a couple and a 5 years old child. The last two years, we have traveled within USA during our child's holiday in Winter and summer. But This year in August, we like to travel outside the USA for 2 weeks.

I am thinking of Malaysia or Dubai. Out flight & stay will be awards. I have heard it is brutally hot in the month of August in Dubai. Kuala lampur will also be very hot for sure. But we can only travel during the school holiday in the summer or winter.

We are a budget traveler and so we won't be eating at fancy restaurants. We like Indian, chinese food as well as burgers and sandwiches. We don't eat sea food and don't like sweet foods.

Where do you recommend we travel to? Any other country or city you can recommend to us? Sri- Lanka? Is switzerland expensive? What else is there to see and to do beside the view of the hills?

We have been to Thailand for 3 weeks before our child was born. We have been to south korea, singapore and hong kong. Singapore is expensive. The attractions are very expensive for three people there but it is very clean there.

Thank you

Flight award availability for 3 people, at USA school holiday time, will be your big problem. Will be many others trying to do the same.

You need to do a lot more basic research. As you have been to Asia several times suggest another part of the world
If you think Singapore was expensive just wait until you get to Switzerland. But costs in EU can be OK.

South America, particularly Argentina & Iguazu Falls. It's their winter during the US summer.

Budapest & Prague are very affordable for the EU and easily connected by trains.

Western Canada into Alaska.

I just returned from a 10 days trip to orlando from ORD with my family. They had warm lovely weather. My original plan for months was to go to Dubai or KLU but I could almost NEVER find any awards in Late December.

I did a quick search on UA or AA for both DXB & KUL and do find coach and some J seats. But temp above 100F is too much in August. Maybe I will try KUL or Sri lanka.

It's a dry 100F+ which is more like a brisk 98F

In case you didn't think it through, the less-popular a place is at a given time, the more likely you might be to get enough good award seats and low hotel rates. And vice versa.

So if you try to go to a place where everything's perfect in August and everyone wants to get there for that reason, it may be much harder than getting award seats to a place at a time when many think it's "too hot". For a hopefully obvious example, hotels are cheapest in Phoenix during the blazing summer there (Phoenix in the summer is for earning points at hotels, not using points for hotels).

Also, for all tropical and near-tropical locations, research when the hurricane / typhoon season is locally. It's not the same time of year everywhere.

Switzerland is painfully expensive (in my opinion). I would not consider it for a budget holiday.
What about Beijing, if you like going to Asia? It will be hot in August but there is a lot to see there and hotels/food are reasonably priced.

I am thinking of Sri Lanka currently, bit too far. Maybe China at another time.

  • Best suggestion so far is South America. Look for something different from where you have been before (~Asia)
  • Relatively short travel time. That can be important with a child
  • Several possible routes/airlines/cities
  • Is a low cost destination (compared to EU and some other places). But depends of what you spend, style of travel, eating out and more.
  • Close to the same time zone as Chicago. That can be important with a child.
  • Will be different from the many Asia trips you have made.
  • Great Circle Mapper

Another thread by OP---> How to find ORD-DXB flight for 3 in December with miles?
Looks like that became Orlando, Florida
