refund for canceling return trip

I was curious how it works if I have purchased a refundable fare round-trip ticket and then cancel the return portion of the trip. Do I just get half the money back or am I only given the difference as if I had originally purchased a one way ticket?

i.e. one way tickets are more expensive usually so can someone just buy a refundable round-trip ticket for a cheaper one-way flight?

I'm pretty sure the answer is "no" but wondering why.

Thanks

You're right. Fare re-calculated as though it were a one-way which as you say is sometimes more expensive than the return.

The answer is 'it depends'. On a full YY ticket you would usually get ca half back, but in your case it will depend on precisely what fare you bought. I've often bought full fare J class seats and cancelled the return for about one third refund.

If you tell them you only intend to fly one way, an airline may try to get you to pay the one-way fare - which, as you noticed, can be higher than the round trip. So, first check the specific fare rules and what the one-way fare would be. Let that guide you.

If you just don't show up for the return flight an airline is unlikely to come after you for the difference, since there are any number of legitimate reasons someone might miss a flight and then make other arrangements to get home. If you make a habit of it, they might get interested in why you're so unlucky with traffic.
