Question Flight Number Question

My wife is flying with UA from STL to IAD on Flight #3420 and returning 8 days later from IAD to STL with the same flight number!
Is this normal or an error somehow?
Never have I experienced the same identical flight numbers for the To and From identical locations - with the same airline!
wondering???

My first reaction was "no, that has to be a mistake," but my timetable also shows both the 8:23 am westbound flight and the 12:55 pm eastbound flight with that number. Seems odd.

Before the merger with US, AA numbered it's flights with even numbers for northbound and eastbound, and odd for west and south, so you could never have the same number both ways. But as part of the merger, they changed numbering systems, so now many flights from hub to spoke use the exact same number for the return flight from spoke back to hub. So now what you're seeing would be common.
