Hey everyone,
Please see a complaint I have below to united airlines. Can anyone have a look please and let me know if I have a case here. Thanks in advance.
Dear United,
On Monday evening, 16Nov15, I booked 2no. flights flying from Belfast (BFS) to Newark (EWR). The flight number for the booking is The total cost of these flights was 649.00. Once the flights had been booked I received a reservation email at 20:22 BST. I checked my bank balance and a reserve was put on my account for the said amount.
On Tuesday when I tried to use my card I was unable to due to lack of funds and upon checking my balance discovered that and additional reserve of 649 had been put onto my account. This meant that I was - 649 in debit according to my available balance.
The payment from the flights had been take on out the Wednesday 18Nov15.
I called to the bank yesterday to see what was going on. They informed me that United had taken the funds for the flights with 2no. transactions @ 324.50 and each, but the reserve from United was still on my account for 649. I was given an authorisation code from the bank (Nationwide) and told to contact United to remove the reserve so that my account could go back to normal.
I spoke with United and managed to speak to a customer care manger called Rex. He tried to help me out but was unable to as the authorisation code I gave him was only for one transaction. He needed a second one. I explained to him that the authorisation code that I supplied was that for the amount of 649 on the reserve on my account. He asked me to call the bank again.
I spoke to the bank last night and they have told me the exact same story which I have told you. The is no change in the facts. The remain the same. The reason the reserve is still on my account is because united did not collect the full amount of monies owed, and instead collected each ticket as a separate payment. This means the reserve for 649 is still outstanding.
I am still without any funds at all. I have been paid my wages yesterday and this does not cover the reserve on the account, so I am still without any money. I travel to England from Ireland each week to work and have now been without any money since Tuesday.
I have no money to pay for bills, pay for fuel, travel cost and food. I have not been given any indication as to when this issue is going to be resolved. I will point out that this issue is nothing to do with the bank as they have acted in the correct matter. I am completely frustrated with the whole situation and feel like I have been treated like a 2nd class citizen.
I await your prompt reply to resolve this situation in its completeness. I will be looking to raise this matter with consumer rights if this is not resolved promptly.
Yours sincerely,
feehelys.
Thanks for any help ^

Welome to FT feehelys, and sorry to hear of your troubles.
As a first point, I think you should redact both your name and that of the UA agent you spoke to (partly to protect yourself and also to conform to the UA rules). Beyond that, I don't think there is much we can do to help you. Whilst you may have a 'case', these things take ages to resolve through legal means (and are usually quite expensive). In any case, the amounts in question are not significant enough (in the scheme of things) to warrant outside help. Usually these authorisation payments are cleared within three days, though I'm surprised that your credit card allowed both the reserve payment and the actual transaction. Amex, which I use exclusively for travel, is very good about this and I've never had an issue. I suggest you hang in there.
