APC machines

Hi. I used these for the first time a few months ago at MSP and am curious as to whether these machines do a secondary criminal check or do they just do a basic check like they manually do at airports until perhaps one is pulled aside for secondary screening? On that note, what exactly is seen on a basic first check?
I'm wondering this because i'm thinking a machine could do it all a lot faster than a person could.
