BA does fly there, but only via London.

Both AA and UA offer one-way award flights for half the mileage of a roundtrip. (DL and US charge the same in miles for one-way and roundtrip, though DL is changing its policy next year.) All FF programs permit award travel on their partners (with some restrictions) as well as the airline that operates the FF program, so AA, BA and UA miles can be used to fly routes that that those airlines don't fly themselves.

You may wish to check the newer JL Business seats - my understanding is they lie totally flat and are one of the more comfortable products around. Good thing, as I don't believe current JL SFO-TYO flights offer First class.
And I think there's an AA credit card with a 50,000 miles bonus right now.
The specific airline fora have lots of useful information: BAEC how to use Avios, AA credit card offers, how to secure MileSAAver awards you need, and JL the aircraft, route and seat information.
