United Milage Plus Question

Hi, I am debating whether or not to join United Milage Plus for my main frequent flyer program. I live in Canada, so the PQD does not apply to me. However I did notice the exemptions for PQM states that free travel from rewards travel do not qualify for PQM. Just to confirm, if I use my miles for a free travel, I do not get any PQM and must pay for an airfare in full in order to get pqm? If true, I think that might be a deal breaker for me....

Award tickets (those booked with miles) do not accrue miles (redeemable or elite qualifying) on any carrier; this is the case no matter where you live. Paid tickets should earn redeemable and elite miles.

The only exception I can think of is the Pay with Miles option available to Delta-branded AMEX holders (in the USA) - First/Business tickets booked via PwM do earn miles.

A similiar programs exists for Chase UA MP miles which can be converted at 1 cpm to buy mileage earning ticket -- the ChoicesPoints program. Not the best use of miles but an option.
