In about two months, I'm flying to South Korea, where I will be for 88 days. However, I've never flown before, so I'm a little anxious about the whole process (even though I've looked it up over and over). My flight is a multiple airlines flight that involves flying from Atlanta to Phoenix on US Airways, then from Phoenix to San Francisco on US Airways, then from San Francisco to Seoul on Singapore Airlines.

I've already received my passport, and I don't need a visa, so are there any other official documents I should bring to the airport?

Also, when I first arrive, what should be my first step? I plan on bringing one suitcase and a backpack (which I've heard I can take on the plane). Should I obtain the boarding pass as soon as I walk in? If someone could tell me the steps of what to do at the airport, it would be greatly appreciated!

Furthermore, because the flight is multiple airlines, do I receive the boarding passes for all flights when I first check in at the airport in ATL? Or do I also have to receive a boarding pass when I check in at Sky Harbor in Phoenix? Or when I switch airlines at SFO? Thanks.

Also, I've heard that if the flight is run by the same airlines, I don't need to exit the terminal. So what should I do when I arrive at Sky Harbor in Phoenix (because US Airways takes me from ATL to Phoenix and from Phoenix to SFO).

You shouldn't need any documentation other than your passport, though your airfare ticket confirmation is probably a good idea. When you get to ATL airport, go to US Airways check-in area (there will be signs for all airlines) and use kiosks to get boarding pass. Then, since you're checking the suitcase, you'll have to take it to the desk and give it to them. You may can do all of this at the desk, but some airports make you get your boarding pass from the kiosk and only go to the desk if you have bags to check.

Normally you can get all boarding passes for your itinerary, but you are flying on SQ after US Airways leaves Star Alliance, so I'm not sure how that will work. You should definitely get your boarding passes for ATL-PHX and PHX-SFO at the Atlanta airport. You may have to get your SFO-ICN when you get to SFO. After you get your boarding passes at ATL, you go through security and head to your gate. There will be televisions that display all flights and what gate they depart from. Plenty of signage. ATL also has a train that takes you from terminal to terminal, or you can walk if you have the time and want to. In PHX, you just go to the gate that your PHX-SFO flight departs from, and there will be seating and plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. Find something to do to waste the time You may not have to leave the terminal at SFO either. Depends on how you get your SQ boarding pass, as mentioned above.

The other thing to do is sign up for frequent flyer programs. My initail suggestion US Airways and United Airlines (for the Singapore Airlines flights). Miles earning depends on the booking class

Take a print out of your tickets and keep the boarding passes until miles post.
