At the top of AA's Partner award chart, it states that awards can be used for one-way travel, or "combined" for roundtrip or multi-city travel. So the redemption rates listed are for one-way travel. For an itinerary like NYC-HKG-TYO-NYC, you would combine three one-way awards.

Another possibility is AS... which has a churnable card with BofA, and allows stopovers in HKG on CX on one-way awards (so you could fly USA-HKG-NRT/HND all on one award instead of multiple awards on AA).
