Advice - Long Layover In DOH

I have a friend from college who is flying PHL-DOH-SIN in May and on the outbound has 20 hours in DOH. Do any of the more experienced travelers have advice on a good way to spend that time and how long the re-entry to the gate will take there?

Also, she usually flies WN domestically and internationally on the cheapest seat but wants to join a FF program to earn miles since she'll be in the seat. Her fare for this is O on QR which only earns 25% miles. Would she be better served signing up for another *A member like US or AA (she's PHL based) and using that FF number on this reservation?

Thanks for any help.

As QR is part of the OneWorld alliance she should join AA freq flyer program. The QR flight can be credited to AAdvantage. She can then use AA and partners airlines the future. For 1 flight do not join QR's ffp. FFP's are for the long term. She cannot use a freq flyer number from a StarAlliance airline with QR. US Airways leaves StarAlliance and joins OW on March 31 2014.

unfortunately, O class on QR will also only yield 25% mileage on American. Might be a better idea to credit to AA though if she'll be more frequently flying AA. (She would also be able to credit AA miles to QR though.) Depending on her mileage goals, you might want to look at BA Avios, as it has a lot of low mileage cost redemption opportunities. (Will also be 25%)

I regularly fly through Doha. On layovers of 8 or more hours I believe that one can get a Qatar Airways provided room. I stayed at a very nice place, including breakfast, before.

The one rule that I remember is that the passenger should present themselves to a Qatar Airways office to arrange the hotel at least 3 or more days before flying. I would personally do it asap.

I don't remember the name of the hotel; Movenpick (sp) somehow sticks in my head. It was a very nice hotel...definitely 4 stars...or more.

Hope this helps a little...

Yeah, I saw that. She got a pretty reason ticket $855 RT on dates that weren't all that flexible so it the O fare was an afterthought.

[edit] Any suggestions on activities in Doha she should look into?
