Ticket pricing

I'm new here , and have a question I hope someone can answer.
I recently booked a flight for April from Quebec City to Hawaii, United, ,with a change in Newark
The flight was several hundred dollars cheaper if one flew from Quebec City to Newark, then on to Hawaii, than if a person just flew the same flight from Newark to Hawaii.
In other words, it would pay one to drive from Newark to Quebec City, fly to Hawaii via Newark, and simply get of the plane at Newark on the return flight.
The difference in price for a First/business class ticket was well over a thousand dollars.
Can someone explain this to me? It makes NO sense .
Thanks

Welcome to FT!
Post #28 in that thread does a good job of explaining why the airlines do this--even though it doesn't make logical sense on the surface, it does once you understand how airlines price things.
