Taj was warned of terrorist attack

according to Ratan Tata:
"It's ironic that we did have such a warning and we did have some (security) measures," Tata said in an interview to Fareed Zakaria to be broadcast on a news channel on Sunday.

While Tata wouldn't elaborate on the nature of the warning, he said security measures — such as making guests walk through a metal detector and not allowing cars to park in the hotel's portico — were eased shortly before Wednesday night's mayhem.

The bomb sniffer dog and handler were shot early on as was the front desk staff and operators.

The Taj Mahal hotel's General Manager had his entire immediate family killed. May they rest in peace.

The hotel won't be open for several months at least -- maybe not even before the middle of next summer is what I would guess.

Fareed Zakaria is from Bombay and it shows. (His father was a famous and pretty well reputed politician).

How does it 'show'?

Well his dad was a member of Indian National Congress but the Brahmins of Maharashtra believe that the ING sold out the Mother Land _ Hindustan.
Am I correct to say that? or is it about what he is saying about the next door neighbour ?

His father was a prominent member of the INC -- a Union Education Minister with a long association with the Nehru-Gandhi family.

About the brahmins of Maharashtra, it's not as simple as that.

Zakaria's references to Bombay make it obvious that he is from there, that this whole episode hits very close to home -- because it quite literally is very close to his family's homes. It also is reflected in some of his comments about dynamics in the region, including those about Pakistan.

Thanks for the reply. I gather that there are a lot of Maharastras who are against the INC - no matter from which castes they are from except for the political cognoscenti Muslims.

BTW: Zakaria's mum has an office at the Taj hotel:
This time, the tragedy is also personal. My mother's office is in the Taj hotel (she is the editor of the Taj Magazine). Luckily she was out of town on the day of the attack. My brother-in-law and niece, however, were in their apartment, which overlooks the Oberoi, the other hotel that was attacked. A dozen commandos took over their apartment, positioned snipers at the windows, and began giving and receiving fire. (My niece is keeping the bullets as souvenirs.) And as with 9/11, I know people who have died. The general manager of the Taj hotel, a young man, lost his family.

Cheap air fares to India

Hello Everybody,
I've been reading the occasional threads on FlyerTalk for the past three years, but have only just become aware--through a savvy traveler friend--of just how invaluable it is. You can bet I'll be perusing FT before I take another trip!
I'm a hyphenated American, originally from India, and came to the U.S. many many moons ago as a grad student. Before I moved to the U.S., I studied and worked in Bombay (from the Portuguese "Bom Baha" meaning "good harbor") now known as Mumbai, after the goddess Mumbai Devi. I have very fond memories of my many years in B'bay, and was devastated by the shootings at the Taj, the Oberoi, and train station, which were part of my daily orbit when I lived there. I lived a few miles south of the Taj, in Colaba, and worked a couple of miles north of there, and rode the bus back and forth every day. The train station which was attacked was just across the street from my office. I had haircuts at the Oberoi, sipped Flowery Orange Pekoe tea at the Sea Lounge in the Taj, and had the best Parsi food in the city at the Victory Stand, about 100 yards from the Taj. I was a stringer for several of the city magazines, and reviewed the food at the restaurant at the top of the Taj when the chef introduced nouvelle cuisine. And my husband lived at the YMCA on Wodehouse Road, just minutes away from Cafe Leopold.
All of this is a long way of saying that I'm really saddened by the recent bombings in B'bay.
Instead of staying away from India, my husband and I are looking for cheap air fares there, and contemplating a quick trip there if we can find fares that would make it worthwhile.
We'd love your suggestions and tips. We're both FTers on Delta, American, US Airways, United, and BA.
Many thanks,
Vintyma

vintyma, welcome to Flyertalk!

I've been thinking about the same thing, You might find some deals
now until 2nd/3rd week of December.. and again in early January.

Most likely You'll see some reasonable deals on
CO/DL/EK etc to BOM for some dates in early January.

That's good to know. I'll start checking fares. Is there any site that's good for finding cheap fares, or should I go to each individual airline's website?

I'm still learning the abbreviations, so please excuse my asking stupid questions. I'm assuming CO is Continental and DL is Delta. What's EK?

What's EK?

EK = Emirates

You can find stuff like that out by using the search function or do what I do - Google "EK Airline".

Welcome to FT!

I take published threats with a pinch of salt...
