A BP petrol station, the Taj, the Oberoi and a train station seem to have been attacked according to CNN. Ongoing coverage there, with claims that the Oberoi lobby is still on fire.

CNN-IBN claims 18 dead so far.

Very sad news.

They've reportedly attacked at least 10 locations around Mumbai - I'm still in the office here (in the area near the Taj, but about 2 miles away, luckily), as I was doing some work late in the office...

There appears to be a hostage situation at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai as well.

Check out the live NDTV video newsfeed here:

Now spending the night - no need to tempt fate, I guess...

BBC/CNN reporting hostages taken at the Taj and Oberoi. India's Anti terror Chief killed (but seemingly not targeted). About 80 killed, 200 injured. Fires on floors of hotels. Still active situation.

Indian intelligence believes the Indian Mujahideen is a front group created by Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Harkat ul Jihad al Islami to confuse investigators and cover the tracks of the Students' Islamic Movement of India, or SIMI, a radical Islamist movement. The groups receive support from Pakistan's Inter-Service Intelligence and are al Qaeda affiliates.

Yes, and was an "encounter" specialist - they would trap known criminals and force a shootout on them - effectively dispensing justice without trial...

(Adding: Well, times have changed since then, when this was frequently done - now they are dealing with terrorists, whose intentions are completely different)

I think this is how he got his rank within the police department...

They apparently managed to steal police/state government vehicles... (but not unexpected!)

Thanks!

Still in office - things have to be completely under control (even when stated here, something else might happen!) before I would head out, now that the police have lost a few of their own...

Too many (untrained) guns on the street right now.

Again, thanks for your concern and I hope that further loss of life will be minimalized.

NDTV reporting that:

LH/other airlines suspending ops?? (thought I saw that..)

Australia reportedly has issued an advisory for citizens travelling to India.

Army is out assisting in BOM. (Said to be 800 soldiers)

9 terrorists reportedly caught. 5-6 terrorists still at large.

100 people rescued from the Taj. Bodies found inside rooms.

Unexploded grenades reportedly sitting in lobby area.

Curfew issued in Colaba and the Gateway of India (Taj location) area.

Train service has resumed, with delays.

"Underworld" (local mafia/criminals) reportedly assisting terrorists. (Would be careful with this statement)

Reportedly some terrorists entered Mumbai by boat. (one attack's eyewitness/victim confirms this)

Clearly the Mumbai situation is still fluid at the moment. I'm hoping that innocent people remain safe but obviously, it's going to take a while yet for the situation to resolve.

In the meantime, respect to the Taj hotel chain for making a note on their website homepage.

MUMBAI SITUATION UPDATE
Taj Hotels are monitoring the development of the unfortunate situation unfolding at the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower in South Mumbai and are fully cooperating with the police and the government authorities who are working towards the safety and security of all our guests and staff. That is all we can say at the moment and we would like to channel all our efforts and energy to ensure a speedy normalisation of the situation as best as we can.

We will rebuild every inch that has been damaged in this attack and bring back the Taj to its full glory.

And huge, enormous thumbs down to the Oberoi for not posting anything at all on their website!

Well, they may not be equipped to update the page remotely (if the site is administrated from the historic Oberoi Towers (Old Hilton, current Trident) location), so I wouldn't be so quick to judge this particular fact.
