India in early September?

After several years of no real vacation due to relocation, job changes and personal issues, my partner and I are ready for a "difficult" vacation. Ordinarily, we travel during the first three weeks of September.

This is probably too general a question, given the climate variation in such a large country, but I'll try anyway. The climate charts I've seen usually show September as less rainy than the summer months. Is that because the monsoon starts tapering off, so that we'd be likely to see less rain than in the height of the monsoon? Or is it an "average" issue, in that the monsoon usually just stops sometime during the month so that the average rainfall is less, but until it stops it's as rainy as ever?

Can travel during the monsoon be enjoyable, or are we likely to be miserable?

Thanks for any input.

By Sep, monsoon rains are practically gone. South West coast would probably be the only place that might see some rain showers in September.
