Transfer for: STV - DEL - JFK

My mother-in-law will be visiting the US for the first time and is nervous about her transfer.

She is going to take the new Air India evening flight from Surat to Del and have nearly 4 hours to transfer to her DEL-JFK Air India flight.

Does anyone have any experience on the new T3 Domestic to International transfers? What happens to her checked in luggage in Surat, does she need to recheck in at Delhi? Will she get both boarding passes in Surat? Any advice in terms of following signs or who to ask for help?

Also, same question about the returns, after she does Immigration, gets her bags in DEL does Customs - how easy is checking back into the DEL-Surat flight?

Anything else she should know about this trip/airport experience/tips.

Thanks in advance!

Re: 'new T3': the terminal opened in 2009, so nothing is really 'new ' about it anymore.
