100 countries, and I'm really stuck on India's process. US citizen, tourist, <30 days. Touring Delhi, Agra, Jaipur on my own.
Attempted the online visa, but stuck at 'reference name', etc. The definition is providing the name of someone I know in India. I do not know anyone. Am I understanding that I must apply prior to arriving as the US is not one of the countries that VOA is available? If so, any suggestions for a 'reference name' workaround? TIA! |

Are you sure that you you need to reference a person. For any contact details in India, I use the details of the first hotel I will be staying at.

I use either the name/address/phone number of the general manager at the first hotel I stay at, or the name/address/phone number of the first AirBnB I stay at. I've never had a problem.

You might want to consider spending a bit more and getting the one-year visa, which permits a stay up to 180 days in a calendar year.
If you get the 30-day visa and can't for some unforeseen reason leave on time you will encounter great bureaucratic hassle |
Has anyone done this for an airport hotel in Delhi? I have 9 hours and 55 minutes. Hoping to maximize my sleeping time, but don't want to waste two hours on the front end and then two hours on the back end for check-in and boarding if this is so cumbersome. Yes, I know about the HI in DEL T2, but going outside is like 15k cheaper in IHG points. May not be worth it...but might even extend to a 24 hour stay if the process is easier. Im traveling RUN-MRU-BOM-DEL-MLE.

The stamping of the e-visa itself is quick, just 3 or 4 minutes. How long you wait in total depends on how many others are getting e-visas of course. Maybe 15 minutes or so recently, but it probably varies.
Don't forget to do the e-arrival card beforehand or like many others you'll be sent back from the counter to do it. (One reason the line moves fast . . .) |
I finally got my evisa approved and has my color photo printed on the form, but do I need to bring an additional physical passport photo with me to use upon arrival in India? Or is the one printed on the form good enough? Does anyone know?

No, just bring the form authorizing your travel to India.

The ETA is linked to your passport number so the airline will see the 'all clear' in their system the moment they capture the passport details. Carrying the printout as a backup a print out of the approval is recommended but I have seen people showing the approval email on their phones/computers to gate agents and immigration staff.Similar to the US you will have to capture your biometrics (picture and fingerprints) upon arrival. IN Delhi they have separate kiosks for first timers for that on the way from the arrival jetbridge to the immigration facility. That speeds up the process at the immigration desk.

" . . . it’s just strange that there is a rectangle on the top right of the form asking for a photo . . ."
? Make sure you are printing out the form headed Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) not the visa application. |
