Has anyone been there? I want to go diving there for 4-5 days. I have heard that it has some beautifull beaches.
I believe Kingfisher flies there now too? Where do we stay? Do you need some special permission to go there? What is the best hotel there?
With it being a muslim state is Alcohol served in hotels? Is November a good time to go there.
thanks!

Lakshadadweep Islands are far west India, in the Arabian Sea on the opposite side of the subcontinent from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. They are, geologically, an extension of the Maldives. You can reach them via small plane or cruise boat from Kochi, but AFAIK independent travel is restricted and you have to sign on to a package.
Can't review the diving, but if you haven't already you might want to visit the Lakshadadweep Islands website.

I went diving in the Andamans last January. We flew MAA-IXZ-MAA on Jet Airways, then took the ferry to Havelock Island.
The diving was very good, but facilities were VERY basic. We dove off a powered dinghy, that had shaken my teeth out by the time we'd spent 2 hrs on it to get to our dive site! Unfortunately my camera broke before I got to the Andamans so I don't have any underwater pics. Certainly a good variety of coral and fish. Is it worthwhile to go there just to dive? Not sure about that, I'm not the type to go somewhere just to dive, but will go if it is possible. I only did two dives while there.
Here is our trip report:

i am planning a vacation to go to lakshwadeep in feb 2013 and i am aghast at the lack of information available online about this place. i like to do the entire travel planning myself and dont want to include a travel agent.
i need help from anyone who has visited here recently. all the websites i am accessing seem to not have been updated beyond 2011 and some are talking of some court verdict which was supposed to apparently come out in july 2012. but i cant seem to find any information on that either. i did manage to get hold of a resort's number and speak to them, but he mentioned lack of availability and now i cant find any alternative arrangement. scuba diving is a criteria.

so i was feeling unsure and called the guy who i assumed was the contact at the resort in agatti. turns out he is the dive operator. i asked him where was he planning to put us up and he said effectively not a single resort is operational in lakshwadeep and there are local people who rent out their houses and he would get us in touch with them and put us up there. permits would be arranged by them and he would effectively be "visiting" the local people.
its really sad that tourism has to suffer this way, now i have purchased my flight tickets but am not very sure whether i want to go ahead with this. anyone done something like this in agatti specifically?

TBH, I'm glad the GoI restricts the development of these islands and Andaman. Looking at what happens in the Seychelles and Maledives, these precious islands should be treated very carefully and not a 5* place be built on top of every little island.
