Peanut Butter in Mumbai?
Gang,
I have a colleague going to Mumbai for several months early next year. As I was working with him to prepare him for the trip... he commented that he was going to have to carry lots of peanut butter. Apparently, it was very difficult to find in Singapore... said he had to pay over $20 USD per jar... thinking he is really addicted to the peanut butter!
I asked someone on this board... and was told that it could be found there.
Is that true? Where would he most likely be able to find it? It is the American brands? What cost should he expect to have to pay per jar?
Thanks,
William

What kind of PB does your friend use? Although I do not live in SIN and never have I cannot imagine it being tough to find there or expensive if its a big brand, ala JIF/Skippy. I know it was cheap and easy to find in mainland China and has been here in HK. While BOM will be a completely different story, I am sure the higher end grocery stores will have it and it should not be $20/bottle. I know there is a grocery store (as of April 2008) near the JW Marriott in Juhu where one could get all kinds of wonderful imported goods. I love poking around such places and found Nutella and other goodies, but forget if I saw PB there. I am sure it was there or it could be ordered.
Clearly there will be all kinds of other such stores across town but this is just what I have seen on the few limited times I have traveled for work to BOM. Good luck!

The higher end grocieries and supermarkets do stock peanut butter and it certainly isnt $20 a bottle. Under $4 would be my guess. And you dont need to go all the way downtown to the marriott - there are supermarkets, malls and such all over the place. Just hop onto your elephant .. well scratch that, catch a taxi and get to the nearest one.

Thanks... I expected it would be easy and not too expensive... but had an experience in Singapore that surprised me... and I think someone told him he would not be able to find it in India.... I never saw it while I was there but then again, I do not eat peanut butter... so I was not looking for it....
Thanks again for the information.

How funny. When I lived in Paris in the '80s you could not buy a jar of peanut butter anywhere except a shop called The American Store that sold imported American goodies at outrageous prices. I'm sure that has changed by now ... but I remember how I craved real PB!

You can find it at most Godrej Nature basket stores in mumbai. Even local stores will keep them. If you are living in south Mumbai there are numerous places where you can get it. One popular store popular among Expats is in Heera Panna ( Shopping Center ) near Haji-Ali. There you can get all your requirements. Keep an eye on the expiry date at these places. If you want to try local brand then there are a couple of them. They cost somewhere between Rs 80 - 140 bucks. Imported ones will run you between Rs 150-200. Let me know if you need address or help regarding any other item.
