Thanks a lot for confirming this PiperAtGatesofDawn and Keyser.
As per the UK Government website this is indeed possible technically, subject to a reasonable itinerary, hope BA’s 30 hr BOM-ORD routing with a ~12 hr layover falls into the “reasonable” category, shall try this when I plan my booking.

Trip is on hold as of now, was to visit family however it turned out that they're coming to India in December, so I pushed my plan to maybe Spring '19.
Most likely will opt for a routing via LHR unless it is significantly expensive compared to other options, since most folks here have confirmed it is indeed possible to go into the city,it's worth a try I guess. Worst case may have to spend half a day at LHR T5 :P

I did go ahead with this last week. Went off smoothly. After landing at LHR went straight to Immigration, was asked to show onward ticket and US Visa and was let in. Could spend around 4.5 hours in Central London before catching the tube back to Heathrow.
Thanks everyone for your inputs.

Have a colleague whose headed to the UK on a single entry work visa in June. He's flying MAA - CMB - LHR for the onward sector. On completion of his work in the UK, he intends to travel from there to YYZ for a week.
Can the same 'Visitor in transit visa' facility be utilized for his return segment; where in he flies YYZ - LHR on a separate ticket & then connects on a UL ticket for the LHR - CMB - MAA. leg ?
