IIRC, this was an official effort by Kingfisher to get JP members .. there was an offical promo too IIRC..

are you sure there was a promo????i would have certainly remembered that....but like i said before, there is no policy in place....if the airline would do it then it would only be on a case to case basis....

if i remember correctly, they not only status matched, but gave away equivalent mileage balances to those who hopped on to KFA from 9W at that point of time under the official campaign.

AI considers status matching on a case-by-case basis. Send in an email, and pray that the babu is in a good mood that day.
Sending the email directly to somebody empowered to make the decision instead of a reservations center worker would also likely be helpful, if you can find that email.
