We took our 2.5 and 5 year old there over Christmas and it was perfect for first timers.

Soda Springs is great if you're trying to get them on skis for the first time. It is a bit far (30 miles) and can get crowded, but it is cheap and perfect for young first timers.

Sledding or tubing - usually we would go up to the top of Mt Rose. Some great spots up there. Worth the drive just for the views. You'll climb until you hit a huge meadow with the best sledding hill on the L. Might be too much snow this year though. A guy rents snow machines up there too.

One large room. Bunk beds are off to the side of the master bed.

January/February casino rate is $119 for the regular rooms (up from $89 last year). Family suite is now up to $219. You'd think there was snow ...

That's the place. I didn't want to jump in with it because it's been long enough that I couldn't be precise, but that was by far our favorite, and one of the oldest reasons we started staying at the Hyatt long ago. Beautiful, wide open, and nothing too hairy.

As for skiing, overall, I prefer the north shore's nature vs. civilization balance, though I know it's somewhat illusory. Northstar's my favorite. And pretty convenient to the Hyatt. (Never have gotten to the Hyatt time shares.) North-facing, nice separation among "green", "blue" and "black", and some nice long blue and green runs. Mt. Rose has similar qualities - and it's also so easy getting up from RNO - almost as convenient for getting to the slopes as SLC. It's possible to ski before checking into the Hyatt. For new skiers and kids, Tahoe-Donner is the best. It was conceived for new skiers and families. Tame but challenging to the new skier. Only green and blue runs. Relatively inexpensive for families. (They still have the family combination pass?) And an active anti-hotdogging commitment and program.

Squaw is too wild and too massive for our taste (e.g., the family aspect). Heavenly is just too wild, and too far to drive from the Hyatt.

Soda Springs is the closest and easiest from the Bay Area and valley, also the easiest to get back from when things are closing in. (Who likes to contemplate getting up over the hill when that's happening?) As a kid and a teen, I used to get up to Soda Springs and Boreal from the Bay Area the most often for these reasons. Though there isn't much there, and there's the greatest number of people who are unprepared. Anyway, way too far and not worth it from the Hyatt.

How do you get the casino rate and does it qualify for points/stay credit?

Thanks.

They changed the rules and you no longer get a stay credit but you do get points for your charges.

Ok, thanks.

Do you know if the casino rate is eligible for the Diamond suite upgrades?

It is not eligible, have never been able to combine. You check in at the players club area and they usually offer the diamond amenity and will try and upgrade room to a terrace or pool view. I have to go to the main desk to get my keys re-keyed for the Regency Club.

This is where we ended up. Perfect for us.

Service at the property has been very good. The ladies in the regency club were very sweet and helpful and both people we dealt with at the front desk were quite friendly and accommodating.

Painfully cold but very pretty. We will be back this year.

We were also upgraded to a cabin with diamond cert.

Very nice. My second time here and both were in the cabins.

Full kitchen and very nice living room with fireplace.

Do you have any pics you can share on FT? I'm thinking about staying here in Feb.

Have an upcoming stay. What is the typical diamond upgrade here? Wanted to use a suite upgrade but the 1BR were all booked for my dates. Should I try to see if i can use it to secure an upgrade to a different for a room cat? I have 3 Certs that will expire at the end of the month if I don't use them, so I'll use them for almost anything at this point.

Also, is the spa access comped for diamonds? Some earlier posts indicated this but it's not clear if that's still the case.

No it is not. I think you can use the resort fee as credit towards access but that is all.

They have some junior suites that are nice, although there is no separate bedroom. Typical Diamond upgrade here (not using a suite upgrade) is to a balcony room in the newer wing; nice in the summer, not so useful in the winter.
