Hang on - so you can redeem an SUA for the price of an (unavailable) standard room, at any property where the standard suite is available?
I picked a random date at the Alila Ventana Big Sur where the standard rooms are all booked but there are still standard suites. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...884d2bbb71.png https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...26f8c18c87.png |

Long overdue. One limitation I am finding is that it seems it doesn't work for hotels I've checked where my company has a specifically negotiated rate. If it's just the chainwide discount or a leverage code it seems to work though, which is really cool.

Not at any property where "the standard suite is available". It's where the standard suite is available *to book with points* which is often not the case at many aspirational properties since there is no program requirement for it. If there's no standard rooms and the standard suite is only bookable for cash then nothing will show up under the points tab whether you select the SUA or not.
As of this post, if you search for 12/20/24 - 12/24/24, there are no rooms bookable on points. But if you select the award, it gives you the option to book the One Bedroom Residence. |
I think this is a massive win for both Hyatt and loyal guests! It’s great for Hyatt as it saves Customer Service times and potential mishaps with improper application. It’s great for guests since now there will be no question of if it was applied correctly, and can be done instantly without needing assistance.
I tested at a property we stay at semi-frequently which is a Hyatt House even and it worked! https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...194d85698.jpeg I will note though that in the properties I checked it only allowed this capability with the SUA when the room is fully bookable on points. I saw some that showed only cash rates or LP + Cash rates and had the standard suite available, but could not use the SUA (Generally, at HH proeprties). I’m guessing those situations would still require reaching out to Hyatt. However, overall it’s a massive leap forward. |
I encountered a minor glitch making such a booking (using the Hyatt Leverage rate, FWIW). It claimed to error out and took me back to the payment screen, so I hit submit/confirm again. The first booking in fact went through, so I ended up with two bookings.

I just did a new reservation using a suite award online. I was pleased that the website reminded me that I had awards in my account and offered me a senior suite rather than the property's junior suite category (which is listed under rooms rather than suites on the Hyatt website, with no indication of which are standard suites and which are premium suites, although I know that their "presidential" and "vice presidential" suites are both premium). Instant confirmation for a booking with money at a very good rate (AAA including parking).

That is interesting. Perhaps it is property dependent. I have a stay at the Hyatt Centric Park City next year. I could be mistaken, but I do not recall seeing their standard suites available for points. I have only seen them offered at a cash rate. Maybe someone more familiar with the property can confirm.

If you try PH Vendome Jun 14-19 you’ll see Park Suite available for cash but this trick won’t make it bookable on points with a SUA. I wonder what the difference is. |

I'm very shocked to say that the implementation appears to be great!
I found a redemption where only a suite was available. 66K points. I clicked to use a suite upgrade, which was an option even without a base room. The price went to 45K. Very impressive. |
Totally not seeing this premium suite thing. They must have fixed it already. No need to talk about it.

I am wondering what happens when you book using an SUA yourself, and then book an adjacent night using a FNC. This is of course very illegal according to phone agents in the past, but I really doubt the system is going to do anything to prevent it and you can do it all by yourself, so what happens?
