Checking out early

I booked a place for 10 nights but decided only want to stay for 8. Can I just let them know at check in I’m leaving early? Is there a penalty? I’m a globalist if that matters thanks

Entirely depends on the rate you booked and the property. E.g. most "Long Term Stay" rates have a minimum stay requirement of 10 nights. If you leave after 8 they can, in theory, reprice the 8 nights to Standard rate since you no longer qualify for Long Term Stay (although many properties will let you check out early without issue).

Thanks. When I booked it last month the rate was the same no matter how many nights I entered. Concierge told me if I shorten the stay I have to pay higher rate, which doesn’t make sense to me. I assumed making a longer reservation would be better than adding on dates but I guess not.

You should contact the property directly rather than going via the concierge. The concierge will give a “conservative” answer.

hyatt could have averaged out your rate so every night appears to look like the same rate. Take for instance if days 1 to 5 was $200 and days 6 to 10 was $100… your rate would probably have shown as $150 every single night…. If you remove days 9 and 10… the average should be $162.50. This is just a generic example.

but with your claim that every night was the same regardless when you made the reservation falls under the category of “how to substantiate?”

having said that, only the property can let you checkout early without early checkout charge or rate change but get it in writing or double confirm.

Why don't you just cancel and rebook an 8-night stay?

Depends on the property. Worst case, leave early and get the 10 night credits for what you booked. Best case the property will adjust it to 8 nights at the same rate.

One option is to tell front desk when checking in that you will be departing 2 days early. They Should be able to adjust your stay and leave the room rate alone.

Why doesn’t it make sense? A month ago your rates were based on dates, room and number of nights. The hotel is expecting you to stay 10 nights.

Now, you’ve decided you only want 8 nights. The hotel will have 2 extra nights to sell with a month’s less time to achieve that. It makes perfect sense to me why your nightly rate would go up.
