Hotel Toranoman Hills: No upgrade (also used a GOH but that didn't help) Grand Hyatt Tokyo: No upgrade (also used a GOH but that didn't help) Hyatt Centric Ginza: No upgrade (also used a GOH but that didn't help) Hyatt Centric Portland: No upgrade Andaz Mexico City Condesa: No upgrade The 2pm checkout is nice and the increased points earning as well, but otherwise I'm not sure there's any value beyond the milestone rewards for gaining Explorist status. I'll keep this post updated and welcome other Explorists to contribute as well. TBH if you want an upgrade as an Explorist, and to some degree as a Globalist too, you’ll just need to ask at check in… Wow, you must be lucky too I never got a GOH as an Explorist! |

You should even get the standard suite if you checkin prior to any other entitled guest. sorry to hear the experience was not what it should gave been on all 3 GoH occasions :( |

I presume one of the GoH was gifted :p, in that case you may need to „force“ the hotel to provide an upgrade, if rooms are available. That should not be the case though, to force.

But it’s always sound advice to ask the simple question, “Are there any upgrades available?” To me forcing would be demanding it, or even contacting Hyatt to pursue the upgrade. Since this thread is for Explorist benefits, not GOH, I’d say it’s best just left there. |

I did forget to add one stay that predated the above list:
Hyatt Centric Portland: Upgraded to a top floor room. While it was still a standard room, I enjoyed how quiet the top floor was and the view was nice. (So technically I haven't completely struck out) |
To be fair, it seems like being upgraded as even Globalist in some of the Japan hotels are few and far between if you don't specifically use a SUA.
I'll be staying in a few dfiferent Hyatts throughout Japan and Taiwan as Explorist next month, so I'll update with some results. I guess I should probably ask at check-in to see if anything is available upgrade-wise too... |

I am globalist now but probably will not renew. Do not have enough travel in the US and I despise Hyatt's brand dilution wrt AI resorts. I might very well do like explorist with 40 year one year, alternating with globalist every other year or something like that. I do not find it is worthwhile to go out of my way to stay at Hyatt. But the few leisure stays per year I got were Hyatt is the best option are then covered via SUA and GoH. The Narwhal You sure stayed at some very elite-heavy properties. They might be representative for you, IDK. But if you don't stay in super-elite heavy places like Tokyo regularly, they might not reflect your typical explorist/GOH experience. |
I'd been Diamond/Globalist for ~ 10 years. It was a lot easier to chase "25 stays" than it is 60 nights. I let it lapse last year (this February) and am now Explorist. The value proposition of Globalist, let alone Explorist is questionable. Without Globalist, what do you get? A 2pm checkout? That's OK, but it's a hell of a lot less than "half as many benefits" as Globalist.
So, no, Explorist isn't worth anything. Certainly not to acquire by spending, and equally ridiculous to acquire by stays (unless you're already Globalist, and it was organic.) For me, the primary way I achieved status had been to chase quality Cat 1s worldwide. I've lots of flexibility and could stay for several weeks on points. Unfortunately, the value and selection of those properties has really dried up. Lots of other new negatives too (e.g., lousy csr, lacking breakfasts, non-compliant hotels, difficulty using cat 4s well), but none of the other negatives fundamentally affected the capacity to re-earn status (and enjoy it). What might make sense instead is always holding the consumer card, and getting the Business card in January of year 1, spending 110k quickly (if you have that kind of capacity), and then dropping the card after a year. Repeat again, in year 3 (sans bonus). You would have status for 2 years without chasing nights. A 2% opportunity cost on 110k spend is $2200, but for 2 years, that looks like $1100 per year. You'll get a cat 4, cat 7, GOH awards, and presumably a few extra suite upgrades if you stay multiples of 10 nights in the first year. A pretty questionable undertaking, but if successful, you could travel completely organically without worrying or otherwise letting the program muck with your psychology. The next step in logic might be in year 2 "I'm going to spend 23 nights anyway" (plus 5), so why not manufacture the extra 32 nights on spend? And you could, but if you're going to manufacture 55 nights every two years, that's like 28 nights of manufacture per year, so it's "more efficient" to spend all at once than to manufacture 32 nights. So wait to spend (if you can handle that quantity). Moreover, with this strategy, in the first/third year you're more likely to hit 70, 80, etc night, and get all of the cooler bonuses that go along with that.** Then coast on the off-year. Spend your 23-ish nights as you wish. You might be also be able to forward-load year 3 with some activity to reduce your spend (stay in December, check out Jan 1; or just stay Jan/Feb) . ** I'm somewhat bandwidth-constrained on the total points I have in a year toward status. Best case without promos: 55*3.5k = 192.5k (quite a high bar). Thinkably, spreading those nights into +30 organic nights year 1 and +20 organic nights in year 2, is same nights, but more efficient on milestones. Also, if like me, you mostly spend points for stays, this strategy somewhat frees "conserving points for cheaper redemptions." I'd more inclined to spend 20k, or 12k, if I new it didn't compete with my ability to generate 4 nights or 3 nights for status. And, again If in the end, that reduces my number of nights to <20, what am I really doing this for anyway? Assuming $1100 cost, 25 nights / year, that's $44/nt for status. If getting a room upgrade, breakfast, lounge access, 4pm checkout, and it were that clean, yes, worth it. Only clean if you know how to create 110k spend. The hurdle might be lower than chasing nights |
