You don't need to use the Hyatt Card but you can merely keep it because there are several targeted promotions for Hyatt CC Holder throughout the year.

The card comes with 5 Elite Nights per year and the earn ratio is pretty good.

In the end, I lucked out and occupancy was so low (which was why the lounge was closed) that the only choice was (comped of course) breakfast from the menu, which was excellent. They were also quite generous about comping drinks and appetizers in the bar in lieu of the lounge happy hour offerings, so I can't complain at all (especially as the rate I had reflected the low occupancy and I was given a wonderful suite). In fact, I would eagerly take the same deal anytime, as much as I like this property's lounge offerings.
If it's a property that normally operates a lounge then they probably don't really know the rules. If it's a franchise-run property (as opposed to Hyatt corporate managed) then (in my experience) the odds of them knowing the rules are even lower. Sounds like a good experience, but keep this info in your back pocket should you ever wish to NOT have the buffet....
