Hello all,

I usually book Hyatt's around the US domestically and they have really generous policys.

But however I called up Hyatt in Hong Kong, and they wanted 550 HKD per day for an extra roll away bed.
The last 2 times I need an extra bed, Hyatt's in the USA would give it to me for free since I was a Hyatt Platinum member.

Am I supposed to get a roll away bed for free or were the Hyatt's in the USA too generous?

It depends on the hotel. They can do what they want on this, although part of the cost might be the additional rate for an extra person in the room.

It shouldn't be for the rate of an extra person though because domestically they say "2" also.

You will find in with Asia hotels they will charge extra for 2 people in a room even with a queen/king. So this isn't uncommon in Asia.

it's local practice generally. Some things are different at home than they are overseas.

Extra people in the room is one of those things.

If a hotel charges extra for a third or fourth person in the same room, why shouldn't they also charge more for two versus one? It's a courtesy when the hotel charges the same rate for one or two people IMO. In some locations, this is standard and in other places, not at all.

So in my situation because I have 3 people, is there any benefit being a hyatt platinum member?

Does the rule of "Room selection" still apply for me at check in based on availability?

I see now, cause the beds are smaller they only want "2 adults" per room.

So the extra 550 is the 3rd adult.

being a platinum member doesn't require much with 5 stays and hyatt gp is one of the most generous on that front with free wifi, 2pm late check-out, 15% bonus on points and an elite rate which is 20% off rack. This is far more than what other chains offer for their entry level elite tier. A legitimate extra bed charge is not unreasonable.
I am even charged this as a courtesy card holder at GH NYC, Andaz west hollywood etc etc. It is a very reasonable fee, and being platinum does not really entitle you to a waiver, nor should you expect it.

Call the hotel reservation manager and see if they help you out. If the third person is child >12 yrs old then may be willing to work with you but if the third person is an adult. Then they probably will not move.

I had to do this with LM in Hong Kong. I have three kids and hotel T&C's stated no more than 2 people per room. I booked two rooms and SPG would not accept my reservation as I had 5 pax's total so one room would have be over their capacity. Discussed it directly with LM reservations and they didn't make an issue of it.

Unfortunately I've already done so and they couldn't budge. I have status with Hyatt but not SPG. The only reason Im using SPG is because I got the bonus 30k from SPG as a starting bonus, I was going to use it to get 1.25X miles until United came out with the club card which gives me 1.5X.

I just wrote a post on this under the Park Hyatt Vendome hotel review.

Hyatt does have a policy documented, but its not intuitive on where to find it. If you are on their website, and go to select number of guests in the room. You will see the options for Adult & Child. You have to click on the "i" next to Child to then get the pop up window and read the fine print.

In the US, Hyatt determines a child as anyone under 18. In the rest of the world a child is defined as 12 and under. If you have a child great than 12 years old but less than 18 and you add them as an adult, your reservation will then be for 3 adults.

You will then see the price options listed for your hotel. You can then set the options to be 2 adults + 1 child and get the price listing. Compare the two room prices to determine how much the hotel is charging for that "extra adult" in the room.

The Park Hyatt Vendome in Paris adds on 100 Euros extra per night. The Hyatt Churchill in London adds on 30 GBP's extra per night. It just varies by hotel.

However, if you want to book a P+C rate, you have to call the Hyatt reservation line to book and if you just say 2 Adults + 1 Child, the agent will most likely not ask your child's age and even if they do they will most likely not know that Hyatt hotels outside the US will charge extra.

I have raised this with Hyatt as this could lead to some big suprises for guests when they check in and find out they have to pay $100's of dollars more than they were expecting.
