Hyatt Place - Santa Cruz, CA REVIEW - MASTER THREAD
A nice addition for Hyatt in the Central Coast Region, California... Hyatt Place gets the green light in Santa Cruz.

This is good. Santa Cruz doesn't have many full- or mini-service hotels. Lots of motels. I really like another hotel nearby, but it's often too expensive. The Hampton Inn doesn't even have a fitness center. So here's a backup. And, for me, Santa Cruz is a lot more interesting and enjoyable than Monterey, regardless of who dominates the town: hippies or yuppies.

It's an interesting read. Valet parking will be mandatory, with street parking blocked for guests.
And the usual protesters were trying to create the fear of elevator hydraulic leaks, etc., etc. L

I actually have a little sympathy for some of the people that were living there in the 60s, still there. They've certainly watched the place change.

Read an article somwhere that said next year, but no date seems set in stone yet. FWIW, A clerk at the Hampton Inn front desk (same owner) thought it might open around June next year.
Framing was done and windows/insulation was in at the end of May
EDIT : Just found this article from Santa Cruz Chamber News June 23rd :
"Hyatt Place – Santa Cruz. The shell of this 106-room, $25.4 million project on Broadway near Ocean in Santa Cruz is virtually completed, with interior work expected to be finished in time for the 2017 summer season. An upscale business hotel, the Hyatt Place expects to compete with the Scotts Valley Hilton for business travellers as well as university and leisure visitors."

The hotel website is up and says spring 2017.
I'll be in the neighborhood tonight and will try and take a photo of the progress.

Interestingly it is listed as a Cat 1 hotel on the HGP website:
https://www.hyatt.com/gp/en/awards/h...jsp?category=1
If that holds, it will be the only Cat 1 Hyatt in California.

Fantastic!
I have numerous times had travel passing through Santa Cruz and thought great I'll stopover there.
However the Fairfield always was either fully booked, or priced so high I skipped it. Adding some rooms will relieve that pressure, and I'll take the C&P at a Cat1 in a second. I sincerely doubt it will remain a Cat1 for long though in that location.
This quote from the 2014 piques my interest:
In Santa Cruz?

Criticism of the hotel included concerns over additional traffic in the crowded neighborhood, lack of adequate parking, alcohol use by hotel guests and a commercial building simply not meshing with a neighborhood that faces significant public safety issues such as illegal drug sales and prostitution.

Website says now accepting reservations after Sept. 1 2017. Looks to be starting out at Cat 2 - awards available at 8,000/ night.
...And $13 for valet parking

I'm not familiar with this area, but I would like to do a drive from SFO-LAX along the coast-- assuming the hotel is decent should I avoid this area for the concerns stated above? Or would that be an overblown response for a 1 night stay?
