A while back the RC was closed for several days.

I used to stay at this hotel for some of my long visits to Tokyo before moving here. I have been in the hotel during renovations of rooms and of several of the restaurants.

I would suggest that you contact the hotel and inquire about how the renovations would affect you. When I was there they honored my request to be located away from the room renovations (I got a high floor "view room") I did not notice any of the room renovation activity at all, I never saw anything or heard a sound.

Knowing the hotel, I am sure that they will manage to provide all of the food and beverage normally provided by the RC in an alternate location.

I would say you will probably be able to have a nice stay regardless of the renovations.

If it is an option for you (I know it is not in the same price range) the nearby Park Hyatt is amazing. I`ve been hooked on it since my first stay a few years ago.

If you do want to stay in Shinjuku, I would definitely say that regardless of renovations the Hyatt Regency is still the next best choice after the PH (although the PH is Vastly Superior)

Another option would be the Hilton (I have never stayed there but have been told it`s nice), that is if you don`t mind staying at a non Hyatt property.

RC under renovation

We had a reservation for the week of March 15, so I called the hotel to find out about their arrangements. Regency club is closed but diamonds get a buffet breakfast in the restaurant as well as 1 alcoholic drink in their main bar 6-8pm

Had 3n stay last week of Feb. and RC was closed. Was upgraded to Regency Club floor with renovated room, away from elevators towards end of hallway. Did not hear any construction noise during stay. Hotel is eerily empty, however, and "over-attentive" staff outnumbered guests at check-in counter lobby area.

I am staying in the hotel now. My renovated room, on the 23rd floor, facing the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, is quite nice. Lots of mahogany-colored wood, beige fabric wall covering, brushed-steel-colored accents. There's an electrically powered shutter on the window that makes the room very dark indeed, as well as a thin cloth blind in case you just want to block direct sunlight. The bathtub, separate shower stall, and sink are now in a separate area from the toilet, which also has a basin with a cold-water-only tap next to it. The bath/shower/sink area is separated from the main room partly by frosted glass, including a frosted-glass sliding door. It's very elegant, but if you and your partner don't like seeing each other or being seen while bathing, toweling off, or dressing, it might not feel private enough. (I'm staying alone, and I don't think I'll invite a colleague to help me determine how private it is. )

Replacement arrangements for the Regency Club for Diamond members are as follows, at least for now:

Breakfast: You can get a Western-style buffet at the Chinese restaurant Jade Garden on the first floor (one level below the lobby) from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., or in the Japanese bar on the third floor called "omborato" (they always write it in all lower case) from 6:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. weekdays and from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. weekends and holidays. Alternatively, you can get a Japanese-style buffet at the Japanese restaurant Kakou on the third floor from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Tea time: You can get complimentary soft drinks, coffee, tea, and snacks at the bar Eau de Vie on the third floor from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., or at omborato from 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. weekdays and from 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. weekends and holidays.

Cocktail time: At Eau de Vie, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., "selected alcoholic and soft drinks, coffee, tea, and one plate of canapés will be served."

I ate breakfast at Jade Garden this morning. It was comparable to the usual continental breakfast at the Regency Club here, with the addition of a number of hot items: rice porridge, bacon, vegetarian "bacon", sausage, roasted potatoes, scrambled eggs (in the very, very runny Japanese style that makes me gag), grilled tomatoes, and maybe some other things.

[Edited the next day to add:] This morning I ate at omborato. The view and ambience are much nicer than at Jade Garden. The food is much the same, but the presentation is more attractive and there is an egg cook making omelets to order. On the other hand, there was a brief wait for a table. I recommend going to omborato and then to Jade Garden if the wait would be too long.

I also went to get evening cocktails in Eau de Vie. There was quite a wide variety of drinks on the drink menu. I don’t remember the whole list, but what I do remember (because they are the kinds of things that appeal to me) are a long list of teas, coffee, soft drinks, white wine, red wine, Campari and <various things>, cassis and <various things>, and kir and kir royale (which are of course special cases of cassis and <various things>). I specifically asked about the one-drink limit that LilZeppelin reported, and was told that there is no limit on drinks, that anything I ordered from the Diamond drink menu before 8:00 would be complimentary.

The canapés are elegant (one might even say twee) but very parsimonious. The serving consisted of the following precious items: a slice of prosciutto; a black olive stuffed with something I didn’t recognize, on a toothpick-like skewer apparently made of a knotted strip of bamboo; a small piece of smoked salmon wrapped around a leaf that I didn’t recognize, with a light yellow sauce of some kind; half a pearl onion; a small piece of dried apricot with a raisin on top; and a little cube of blue cheese (maybe 1.5 cm on a side) on the tiniest cracker I’ve ever seen (maybe 2 cm square and 1 mm thick). I have to say that it was a disappointment compared to the usual Regency Club snacks at this and other Asian Hyatts. I should admit that the fact that I'm not above making the Regency Club snacks a substitute for dinner may be what makes me disappointed in this banquet for the King of Lilliput.

I would not call the hotel "eerily empty", but it does seem that the usually very attentive staff are more numerous and even more over the top in attentiveness this time.

I heard construction noise while passing the construction area in the elevator this morning, but not at any other time.

A friend of mine used her upgrade award at this property a few weeks ago. She got a newly renovated suite on a club floor and said that it was wonderful. Sounded like it was worth using the awards here. I have not stayed here recently but I like the outlook of the restaurant in the lobby. I just need better breakfast in the club lounge. Other than that, the hotel seems to have been impoved a lot in the past year.

I just finished up a 5 night stay here at the Hyatt Regency Tokyo and overall I am somewhat disappointed. As a newly minted diamond member, I received absolutely no mention whatsoever of my status at check-in or at any time during my stay. On the 2nd morning I asked the concierge where breakfast for Diamond members was - he pointed me to a "lounge" on the 6th floor. The breakfast was pathetic - about 4 choices of bread (croissants, rolls, etc.), 2 types of pasteries, and coffee. I don't even drink coffee - so I had nothing to drink (no water, no oj?). I never went back. The room I got was the room I booked although it was very nicely appointed. The staff were very kind but that's typical for pretty much any hotel in Japan.

Oh well... I'm going to the Park Hyatt next week (with suite upgrade ) so hopefully that experience will be a little better.

Lounge on the 6th floor? I think you were directed to a lounge for regular goldpassport members. D members are entitled to use the club lounge on the 9th floor, where they have a variety of drinks and food including salad, eggs, bacons, etc. I guess you probably missed cocktails in the lounge too. It's really a shame on the receptionist who should have explained all the D benefits.

kats is right. The Regency Club (on the 9th floor) is a perk all Diamond members get, and I think it's one of the best clubs I've been to. The cocktail service is excellent (with great Hors d'œuvres and snackies!) and their breakfast is one of my favorites. Homemade bread and rolls, with a nice selection of fruits, juices, eggs, bacon, salad, and more.

Are you sure your Gold Passport number and info was attached to your reservation? This hotel is very good about welcoming me with my Regency Club access and there's always a card in the room welcoming me back.

Another thought is because you were recently made Diamond, perhaps your status didn't transfer/show up in their system, yet? Just a thought, anyway.

Still, I really wish you would contact the hotel and explain the situation so it won't happen (to you or anyone else)again, and also so you might get some compensation for losing out on what I think is one of the best reasons to be Diamond (I stay at this hotel pretty frequently, and the Regency Club access is one of the key reasons).

Sorry to hear about your situation.

I really enjoy this lounge. The orange salad dressing and really crispy bacon they have in the morning makes this my favorite hotel breakfast. I should ask for the recipe next trip.

To be quite honest, I really don't know what happened. I'm not one to argue too much about "little" things... especially here in Japan where I know they're very... uh... "rules" sensitive. But as a newly minted Diamond member (thanks to the current promo), I really was eager to try out a program other than SPG and unfortunately it was a HUGE disappointment.

However, my opinion has improved substantially once I checked in to the Hyatt in Kyoto this morning. I was immediately welcomed as a Diamond member, presented with breakfast certificates for each morning of my stay, provided with a complimentary drink at one of the bars, and finally escorted to my room by a nice Canadian guy named Greg who was extremely helpful in explaining the room features and especially, how to operate the Japanese remote control. I went out for the day and when I came back I had a note from the manager to join him for evening cocktails tomorrow and a small gift of Japanese sweets. Very nice. ^

I am going back to Tokyo on Sunday at checking in to the Park Hyatt where I've been upgraded to a suite. After this, I'm off to Singapore where I'm already booked at the St. Regis (free nights promotion) but if the Park Hyatt Tokyo goes as well as the Hyatt here in Kyoto, I will book one night at the Hyatt in Singapore to give me my 15 nights for status through next year.

What I think what had happened at HRT is that you probably booked your room when you were still not a diamond. Some hotels do not update the customer's profile when checking in. This is probably one of the reasons why we are asked to show the membership card.

Good to hear you enjoyed staying at HRK. It is one of my favorite Hyatt hotels.

Sounds like you're gonna have a great time! That's great to hear your stay in Kyoto went much more smoothly (and impressively!). I hope you'll consider trying Hyatt Regency Tokyo another time when/if the opportunity arises. I really do like that hotel a lot and hope that you, too can experience it for yourself.

Safe and fun travels to you.
