SHOPPING
1. Safeway
a. Multiple locations (2)
b. Significantly more polynesian/asian offerings in regards to food, Made in Hawaii, Grown in Hawaii goods

2. Longs Drugs
a. CVS-owned; all CVS coupons and rewards are accepted.
b. Many locations, including Lihue and Poipu https://longs.staradvertiser.com/loc...p?island=kauai
c. Stores have a more significant focus on local items and goods than Mainland CVS stores.
d. Reliable source of distilled water for CPAP users.

2. ABC Stores
a. Significant number (3) of locations, accessible.
b. They carry almost nothing but local items, and also beer

3. Costco (2.6mi from LIH):
a. Gas up before dropping rental car off. It was at least $0.80/gal cheaper than anywhere else (8/20/18)
b. Kauai/Kona coffee, other gifts (e.g., macadamia nuts in multiple preparations)
c. Gift cards for local vendors are often available
d. Food court (many of the same items as continental US with same prices)
4. Walmart (1.3mi from LIH). Exceptionally busy. Busy store inside/outside/around it.
a. Beach/pool toys
b. Snacks (if you don’t have a huge family staying a long time to eat Costco bulk item)
c. Souvenirs (they have a section in the front for this)

KAUAI TOURS/SELF-GUIDED ADVENTURES
Swimming/Snorkeling
1. Poipu Beach - Massive reef offshore, with a reef onshore separating two beaches. With the closure of Tunnels/Ke'e/Lumahai beach due to landslides on Kuhio highway, Poipu beach has one of the top snorkeling spots on the island currently, and is just 5 minute drive from the hotel. Turtles and monk seal are spotted here regularly
2. Lydgate Beach - protected snorkeling spot perfect for beginners. Located on East side of the island. This looks close, but traffic in Kapaa can make this a 45 minute drive.
3. Anini Beach - Northeast on island, 1 hour to reach. Reef with significant amounts of sea life.
4. Tunnels Beach/Ke'e Beach - currently closed. 1 hour 30 minutes away. Snorkel right next to the beginning of the Na Pali coast, with significant amounts of turtles. Before Kauai restores access to the beach via Kuhio Highway, residents are strongly considering limiting access to the beach (no vehicles, only shuttles, or limited number of vehicle permits sold per day). Parking fills up fast here, and these beaches are the end of the road on island.

GUIDED TOURS
1. Wailua River + Secret Falls Hike. 30-45 minute drive from hotel. Cost $40/pp. 4 hour+ trip. 1 mile of kayaking followed by a short hike to a large waterfall. Some tours offer pineapple as a snack at the waterfall. Some offer just chips or granola bars like what you might buy from Costco.
2. Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple. See the Huber families sugarloaf pineapple farm. Hole in the mountain farms is situated on 38 acres of land, where you will be given the rare opportunity to taste sugarloaf pineapple. An extremely low acidic pineapple that has a core that is edible, and not stringy. $65/pp w/ free pineapple and smoothie. The ARV of the pineapple you receive will be around $8-15. Sugarloaf pineapple sells for $3-4 a pound, with an average pineapple being 5-6 pounds in size. This is a once in a lifetime experience. 1 hour from GH Kauai http://kauaisugarloaf.com BOOK TOURS IN ADVANCE. We booked two weeks in advance, and at the farmers market on a Wednesday we overheard them say they were booked out for 2 weeks (so almost September). They only do tours on Thursdays.
3. Chocolate Tour. Lydgate Farms has a chocolate tour. $95/pp
4. Captain Andy's Tours. Captain Andy is currently leaving out of the south shore in Port Allen. He offers all 3 kinds of boat tours. 55ft catamaran w/ restroom, warm water rinse, cooked lunch, snorkeling, napali coast, alcoholic drinks included (up to $179 pp). They have smaller boats that do not have restrooms/rinse/cooked lunch, but will go in the sea caves. And then they have raft boats that require you to wear gloves, and are very much a thrill ride. They do beach landings in those, and basically anything. The choices are listed from most comfortable to least comfortable. 55ft catamaran is the preferred way for most

HIKING/SIGHTS
1. Kalepa Ridge Trail. 1 hour from GHK. Free. 2 hour round trip. 1.7 mile hike. Classified as hard by alltrails.com. For the time and distance you walk, this trail beats the Awaawapuhi Trail
2. Awaawapuhi Trail. 55 minute from GHK. Free. Half day. 6.7 mile hike. Classified as moderate by alltrails.com. It is a longer hike, but once you get to the end, the views are IMO better than the Kalepa Ridge Trail
3. Canyon Trail to Waipoo Falls. 50 minute from GHK. Free. 3 hours. Hike to a the top of a waterfall on the Waimae Canyon.
4. Heritage Trail. Literally on the beach at the GHK. Free. Not necessarily a crazy cool hike
5. Wailua Falls: do some research if you plan on doing a hike down to the waterfall
6. Spouting Horn. 7 minute drive from GHK. Underwhelming, but worth it to say you've seen it. 2-3 minute drive from Spouting Horn is the Kukui'ula Village Shopping Center, which has a Bubbas Burger/Tortilla Republic/The Lanai/Merriman Fish House/Eating House 1849, Dolphin, Ruth's Chris and other restaurants. To see the spouting horn, you will walk past a 150-200ft of street vendors selling crafts, everyday of the week.
7. Queen's Bath-dangerous, slippery and muddy on way day, rocky and if you are inside you may get washed out by the waves. But go at sunset and you'll see why.

FARMERS MARKETS
1. Kukui'ula Village Shopping Center - Wednesday Evening, 3:30PM - 6PM. Kauai Sugarloaf Farms attends this, and will let you try their pineapple and buy tours here. There is supposedly a beer garden, but I didn't find it. There is also food from restaurants there, as well as a booth by the "Pie Lady" (The Right Slice).

RESORT FEE INCLUDES
1. Free self-parking (for all, not just Globalist)

2. Free laundry in each guestroom with free laundry pods

3. Towel at Valet for excursions (and after 7pm for pool)

4. Free bike use

That was on DSU w/government rate. So the question becomes why they stopped doing that? Just because they can't distinguish between challengers and those who did standard requirements?

I would think at this point you'd still be offered something else (if available)-considering how often you've been.

It can't be just because of Diamond Challenges--- if the Ocean Suites and above are still unoccupied, wouldn't it be all the same to upgrade Diamonds even if they earned through challenge?

Next month will be third stay (nights 13-19), and my second time using DSU with Gov't Rate. Hoping for an upgrade beyond, but no expectations.

They stopped because for a while, diamond was given away on the challenge and people got the DSUs and never completed it. Kauai was one of the properties that were very high on the aspirational list and they were bombarded with people. As well, with all the MS, along with the challenge, there were a lot of people trying to get in.

The bloggers pushed Kauai heavily. The end result is what you're seeing now.

What they've started doing is selling the ocean suites at a discounted rate rather than keep them empty. I've seen them go for around $600 a night. Several properties are doing it. Waikiki is as well.

I haven't gone back in a few years. We've spent quite a bit of time on other islands, and even this upcoming trip, I'm headed to Maui with friends instead. Though I do want to get back to Kauai in the near future. I'll see how my luck runs then!

Have a good time and hope you get lucky with your suite^^

Questions re: garden suites and upcoming stay using DSU/cash and points

Staying at the Hyatt Kauai soon, diamond using DSU with Points and Cash.

Given what I have been reading, I assume this means we will almost certainly be in a garden suite. I am wondering if the garden suites are all essentially in the same location with the same wide open lawn and garden view or:
1. Do any of the garden suites have a more obstructed (worse) view or parking lot view?

2. Are any of the garden suites in a more convenient location to the club and/or the pools, or do any of them have a partial view of the ocean?

3. We really like being near the club and having an oceanfront view, probably even more than having extra space and amenities in the room. Do you think it would be possible to downgrade to a Deluxe Ocean View Club Room?

4. If we decide we want to try to downgrade to a Deluxe Ocean View Club Room how should we go about doing this/who should we contact at the hotel?

None of the garden suites have a view of the parking lot.

Given the garden suites are pretty much below grade, it's not that easy to get to the club. You could walk from the outside along the beach path or take the internal elevator. I used the laundry when I was on the higher floors, and it was quite a hike down there from some areas of the Poipu wing.

You might see some of the ocean, but it will only be if you're standing up or out on the lawn

They might accommodate your request to downgrade to a regular, ocean view room. I was on a full points stay for a suite and they refunded the difference in points and put us in a ocean front room. By the time we arrived, all the nicer suites were full - there was a convention in house. Plus, as I said, they've now started selling them for reasonable rates.

You can ask at the front desk for a downgrade. Unless they're fully occupied, they're likely to oblige. From the Garden suites, you can (IME) see the ocean from your room, but it's still not the view you'd get on a higher floor. Garden suites really don't have any more amenities than any other room, just the space. But it's a huge amount of space (compared to normal rooms). I enjoyed having a kitchen space so I could bring food from the club back to the room and have a good place to put it. I also enjoyed having a good couch to relax on. Normal rooms are by no means small, but you'll definitely notice the difference.
Every room in the hotel is inconvenient to someone (you'll either be far from the pool, far from parking, far from the club, or all three). Garden suites are far from everything (Club is the closest thing to Garden Suites). You can also inquire about upgrading-- cost and availability may vary.

The only thing the garden suites are close to is the laundry

Jeez... just looking at the rates for those during the week I'll be there.
700 for an OS and 975 for DOS--- much cheaper than they used to be.
Yet when looking just a week out, the rates are the same and they're not sold out. So when I finally get there and they still haven't sold, am I still ending up in a GS or will they finally cave and upgrade me? Only time will tell I guess.

Update: I called to inquire about upgrading to Deluxe Ocean Suite. Was told that pending availability, it would be $350 a night extra. Incredible deal for such a room.

This is our favorite hotel in America. We go once a year to Kauai and always stay at the Grand Hyatt.

Amazing place.

Hi!

I have a trip to Kauai coming up and we will be staying at the Grand Hyatt for 4 nights (using free night certs) from Oct 20-Oct 24 in a Standard Guest Room. I realize Platinum doesn't mean much, but I was wondering what I could expect in terms of the likelihood of getting an Ocean View room?

Furthermore, I read in an earlier post that they do offer Club Room upgrade for +$75/nt which basically guarantees an Ocean View room at check-in. Can/Should I contact the hotel in advance regarding that?

Thanks!

Your odds of getting an upgrade can't really be accurately calculated IMO... too many variables.

A couple years ago as a platinum I used the free night certificates from the Hyatt Visa and was given a pool view room (which was standard for the certificates at the time)--- no upgrade for those two nights. On the third night I had paid for a Deluxe Ocean View and was upgraded to a small version Ocean Suite. I ended up extending my stay and paying for two nights in a Garden View and on those nights was upgraded to a Deluxe Ocean View.

Definitely recommend contacting the hotel about Club Room. Not sure if $75 is accurate, but if that's what it is, it is completely worthwhile (Club is a huge benefit at GHK IMO)

Club room means access to the club, but doesn't get you any better of a view. You may be confused due to some references to the unusual point redemption option this property offers that includes both club access and an ocean view (while the regular redemption has neither). However, you can have either one without the other.

Google the GMs name and email them. You'll almost certainly be offered something, probably for cash, assuming they have space. The sooner the better.

I'm a platinum as well and they always upgrade my room. You also have full use of the spa facilities which are very nice!!! The staff there really caters to the gold passport guests. October isn't a busy time in Hawaii, you can scope out the layout online and pick a room before hand, then request the one you want at check in. I actually prefer garden view at the Hotel as you can just walk straight out onto the pool area which is unbelievably huge. There's one corner room that is almost a suite but is considered a garden view. I'll have to remember what room # it was.

Enjoy your stay. To the left of the beach is an unmarked trail that has spectacular cliff views.

Proportionally far more ocean view rooms than parking lot view rooms. For a Diamond historically hard place to get a suite upgrade but easy place to get some view upgrade unless it is just sold out.

If that would reach down to plat in a slow month is your guess. Do you feel lucky?

Club room probbly gets you into the club wing, which above the first floor has few if any rooms that don't have partial ocean view or better.

I love the place, but if you will be dissatisfied with the parking lot view book the minimum room catagory you required to really enjoy the trip.

Unless the property is extremely busy, a platinum should not get a parking lot garden view, however, the garden view category includes I believe rooms on the ground floor facing the ocean but very hard to see, so those rooms or a partial ocean view are likely.

Not my "favorite" hotel in USA
After spending a week in Andaz Maui, the GH Kauai was pretty disappointing (service, breakfast resort,...).
We had the DSU for a garden suite but requested to be downgraded to Ocean front on 6th floor.
Parking is really far, on average at least 6-7 min walk, we parked on the employee parking which is located just before the hotel entrance and much closer to the west wing.
We took full breakfast buffet (not in club) and that was subpar compared to the Andaz.
The rates at GH were around 550$ a night, compared to Andaz (400$) and St Regis Princeville (500$), difficult to justify the rate.
