I wouldn't check bags because they take a while to unload the bags and and I seem to recall that they do charge for the first checked bag. The Kowloon-Macau ferry doesn't care what you bring aboard but many of their ferries take 15 minutes longer.
I carry a 32" plus a medium sized backpack on a big trolley almost every week.
Several years back I had some discussions every now and then, but not recently. The rules and the facts differ so much here in Asia.
I even carried a full size room door twice from Macau to HK. (Cargo forwarders suck at their best for this route, especially in macau, where one has to deal mostly with people who are too stupid to get a Job in a casino.).

Anyone know how long it'll take to get to Macau from the airport if I just have a carryon? My flight gets into HKG Tuesday (in 2 weeks) at 4:20PM and there is a ferry leaving at 5:25PM. Then there is immagration at Macau, right? I kind of understand the process, just don't know where the bottlenecks are. Any tip would be appreciated.

The ferry should get to Macau at around 6:10 or 6:15. Immigration line can be long, but I think it should speed up soon when Macau let HKID holders use the automatic channels. Expect about 15-20 minutes to get through Macau immigration. At times, the taxi line there may be long, but you may not be using a taxi.

Hotel shuttles are free.

Depending on the hotel, right? I haven't figured out where I'm going to stay yet. Don't think I can afford Wynn, Venetian, or Grand Liboa. I can probably do old Liboa with the off $50 HotelClub deal.

I took a shuttle to some hotel; I honestly don't remember which. But it didn't really matter because they are reasonably clustered and the shuttles are all free from the ferry terminal. Shuttles TO the terminal may have a nominal charge, but from the terminal to the hotel/casino should be free.

Also, I walked all the way to the far side of the immigration waiting area and that seemed to reduce my wait time.

Are they going to do that? Only permanent ID holders, I believe.
But then, it may not speed up the visitor's lines

I hope that won't jam the electronic channels for Macau residents.

Adding some info regarding the OP´s question ...

Now there´s a non-stop service from the Taipa ferry terminal to Hong Kong vv. (that ferry terminal is a provisional one since the "real" one is still under construction ...
The ferry terminal at Taipa island is right next to Macau airport !
After exiting the ferry terminal i decided to walk to the terminal which took me 6-7 mins leisurely walking (with mid-size luggage).
Only casino shuttle busses showed up at the ferry terminal so that made my decision easy to walk rather than wait for a taxi ...

The ferry company between HK and Taipa is: www.cotaijet.com.mo
I just used Cotai Jet in November when going from HK to Macau airport !

The fares are similar to those between HK and Macau but it saves time/hassle if you´re headed from/to Macau airport !
