A Case of Wine as checked Baggage
Hi,
Did anyone ever checked in a case of wine as a baggage? We'll be flying to HK for a wedding and thinking if we can check in a case of wine as our baggage.
Anyone have any idea if it is safe or do-able?
Thanks

There is lots of info out there on this topic.
Simply Google "wine as checked luggage" and you will
have lots to look through now, rather than wait
here for the same info to be repeated.

There is no limit on taking wine into HK since duty was abolished so customs isn't an issue. I've packed multiple bottles into checked baggage before and they have all arrived safely (thanks to bubble-wrap etc), but have never shipped a whole case. I'd imagine the possible issues would be whether the airlines you are travelling with allow it (can't see why not) and it actually making it to the final destination - you're obviously not going to highlight it as containing wine, but it might still be a little difficult to disguise.

Gaucho 100k on the Argentine forum is a wine merchant and a specialist in worldwide wine shipping. I'd suggest a pm to him if you've any more questions. If it has to do with wine buying, shipping or selecting he knows the answers.

I've brought back a case from EZE and it arrived looking beter than I did. As jbcarioca points out the FT Argentina forum is luck to have Gaucho100K as a regular participant and reading through some of his posts and thread specifically about shipping wine will ease your concerns.

The styrofoam wine shipping boxes are fine for airline checked baggage use. Any other method has some risk of breakage, but bubble wrap around each bottle is also effective. The chance of theft varies by what airport your wine will be traversing -- it is zero at the destination HKG due to customs surveillance.
