Internet problem with tablet only

So staying at a DoubleTree all devices except one, a Microsoft surface, are having no problems connecting to the internet. The surface will not connect at all....

I would think it was the tablet except that we just got back from a multi hotel road trip and had no problems at any other hotel.

Anyone else ever experienced something like this?

Funny thing is in the last month or so have stayed at HGI, HI and DT. No problems. This DT is the first one I have had problems.

I am going to try to set my phone (which is connecting fine) as a hot spot.

Just wondering if anyone else has ever experienced something like this.

This is not really a Hilton issue - should have really put it in another forum but would be interested if other hilton guests had a problem like this...

When I am downstairs I am able to connect to the Honors Wi-fi. It must use an extender that gets it to the 6th floor or another router that my tablet is having an issue connecting to... And while a weak signal I am occasionally able to connect to "Hilton Lobby" in my room.

Reset

I had the same problem. In my case the surface, my wife's lenovo tablet and our phones connected to the internet, but my lenovo notebook refused.
Tried many things, but resetting the network was the solution, after the reset my lenovo connected instantly. I also had used this device in countless hotels.and it developed connection errors till it did not want to connect.

Settings - Network and internet - Status - Reset network

Make sure that the tablet DNS settings are 'use network provided'. I have had instances where public wifi didn't like my use of external DNS

I think it needs to use the wifi's DNS to get to the captive portal, once you're "logged in" you can set it back to your own DNS server.

Doing this on my Macbook which I use for travel is annoying, but this thread prompted me to google for an easy way to do it, so thanks for posting

The generic 'Not Connecting' translates to many different problems, I see this most often on my iPad but it happens on my PC/Mac too:
  • Wi-Fi on 5 GHz using a channel that is not supported by your device. Supports 5 GHz does not mean EVERY channel is supported. Some devices only support a very limited range of 5 GHz channels. This is seen as no Wi-Fi signal on your device.
  • DNS issue already discussed, custom DNS and not using the captive portal DNS. You have a Wi-Fi signal indicator but captive portal doesn't load.
  • Browser incompatibility. I see this with iPad Safari where the browser timeout trying to resolve the captive portal is longer than the captive portal allows. Force enter an ip address 1.1.1.1 or 2.2.2.2 in the browser window. Or try to go to google.com or yahoo.com. This forces the captive portal to load.
  • Browser incompatibility. Try Firefox or Chrome.
  • Do you use a VPN? I use ExpressVPN and the Internet Kill Switch which stops all traffic from using a public Wi-Fi unless the VPN is up also has the effect of preventing Hilton and Marriott captive portals from working. I have to disable ExpressVPN Internet Kill Switch to get the captive portal working.
I have not tested another idea, but could my browser cookie security settings be keeping me from getting the captive portal. Do some captive portals use cookies and am I blocking some types of browser cookies needed to connect to captive portal.

I solved most of my connection issues by creating a second user on my laptop with no security settings on the browser and all defaults for Wi-Fi and DNS. I first log in as that user, connect to Wi-Fi, then logout and back in as me. The captive portal now knows my Wi-Fi- MAC address and it always works for VPN and other apps. Unless it is one of those 24-hour captive portal setups where you get to re-authenticate every 24 hours.

I'm far from an expert. Nonetheless, I just had a problem connecting on a MacBook, and here's how I solved it. I created a new Location in the Network pane. By default, the new Location did not have DNS servers listed, and I added none. I connected, got directed to the captive portal, authenticated, and then switched back to the Location I wanted to use, which did have my preferred DNS servers.

If that contradicts the advice or experiences listed above, please explain. As I said, I'm not an expert.

Resetting the network worked for a while but then stopped working. I tried resetting again and it did not fix it again.

Ended up setting up husbands tablet as a mobile hotspot and that worked.

Today I tried resetting the network and it is working as a direct connection to hhonors wi-fi.

We check out tomorrow so I have a work around if it goes wonky again.

Now Hilton wi-fi is not working again - even after resetting. It works fine in the lobby.

Using hotspot again from husbands tablet that is connected to the Hilton wi-fi....

Often browsing to a non SSL site will redirect you to their login page as most sites redirect to https which fails unless you're already logged in. I always use NeverSSL - Connecting ...

Are you saying that the tablet is acting as a hotspot using the Hilton wi-fi and not using its own cellular service? If you know of a way to do that with an iPad, please share the info.

Tablet does not use cellular service. We connected it to Hilton wi-fi and then used it as a hotspot. then connected the MS Surface that would not connect to Hilton Wi-Fi to the other tablet.
