The most commonly posed question about the new food/beverage benefit, which is now extended through the end of 2022, is how it works for multi-night stays. Here's what we do & don't know:
  • The credit does not accumulate over the duration of your stay. For instance, if you stay for 2 nights at a $15/night property, you cannot use the benefit toward a single $30 purchase at one time.
  • Thus, the credit for a given day may only be used on that day. It expires afterward.
  • Unfortunately, Hilton has offered no clear explanation of what qualifies as a "day." (FAQ 24 purports to give an answer, but makes no sense.)
    • Some properties reportedly apply a "calendar day" rule. For a stay arriving Monday and departing Wednesday (two nights, ergo two credits), this means the credit is available only on Monday (first credit) and Tuesday (second credit), with no option for breakfast use on Wednesday.
    • Other properties don't use midnight as the cutoff, but instead allow use of a day's credit until the bar/restaurant closes, even if that occurs early the next calendar day (say, 1am). This interpretation also precludes use for breakfast on the day of departure.
      • Neither of these approaches makes logical sense, given that on a one-night stay the credit may be used either on day of arrival or day of departure, per FAQ 8.
    • A few properties reportedly use the standard checkin or checkout time as the dividing line: guest arriving Monday has until noon or 3pm Tuesday to use the first day's credit (or whatever the checkin/checkout times for that property are).

Official Hilton benefit statement (updated for 2022) with FAQ at end:

Through 2022, we’ll be offering Gold and Diamond members a Daily Food & Beverage Credit at our luxury, full-service, lifestyle and Hilton Garden Inn hotel brands in the U.S. This credit is offered as part of the Hilton Honors MyWay benefits, in place of the prior complimentary continental breakfast.

Starting February 1, 2022, we are also increasing the credit amounts across our full-service and lifestyle brands from $12 to $15 per night, and $15 to $18 per night in select markets.

Traveling with a friend or loved one? You and up to one additional guest registered to the same room will each receive the daily credit. The credit applies to the one guest room in which the Elite member is staying and will be provided for each night of your stay.

You can use the credit towards eligible food and beverage purchases that are charged to your room—any time of day—at designated outlets throughout the property. Refreshing beverages? Check. Appetizer or desert with dinner? Check, check. Breakfast at the restaurant? Sure. Breakfast to go? No problem.

Gold members can choose to receive the Daily Food & Beverage Credit or Bonus Points as part of their Hilton Honors MyWay benefits. Diamond members will receive both the Daily Food & Beverage Credit and 1,000 Bonus Points at all brands listed above except for Hilton Garden Inn, where Diamond members can choose between the credit or 750 Bonus Points. Visit your MyWay profile through your Hilton Honors account online or through the Hilton Honors app to select your preferences before your next stay.

The credit will be applied automatically to your bill for any eligible purchases charged to your room prior to checkout.

24. When does the credit expire each day?

The credit does not “expire” until the member checks out, however, the daily amount re-sets each day to the maximum daily credit value. Members can use up to the total daily maximum and are responsible for anything beyond that amount.

Since the member gets a new credit each day (for the number of nights of their stay), the only day they can use any leftover credit is the morning of check-out.

25. How will the F&B Credit work between January 1-February 1, 2022?

Stays that take place between January 1-February 1, 2022 will receive the complimentary Daily F&B Credit amounts announced in 2021. The increased credit amounts for Hilton’s lifestyle and full-service brands will go into effect on February 1, 2022 and beyond.

26. How will the complimentary Daily F&B Credit appear on my hotel bill/folio?

The total eligible Daily F&B Credit amount used and billed to the room during a member’s stay will be automatically applied and appear as one line item per day on a member’s hotel bill/folio, deducted from the total stay cost at the end of their stay.

27. How will the Hilton Honors Daily F&B Credit be handled at hotels with Executive Lounges?

At hotels that have an Executive Lounge that offers complimentary breakfast, Diamond members and Gold members upgraded to Executive Lounge access will not receive the Daily F&B Credit. These hotels will provide the Daily F&B Credit to Gold members not upgraded to Executive Lounge access.

28. Is the Daily F&B Credit now a permanent benefit?

In addition to increasing credit amounts across the lifestyle and full-service brands, Hilton Honors is extending the complimentary Daily Food & Beverage Credit into 2022 and will continue to evaluate this benefit to make the best decisions for our members going forward.

Few Such Mandates Are Surviving COVID and Nassetta

As long as hotels are mandated to provide suitable options that fit within the credit, then some of the sting of this is lessened. But if hotels just crank up their list price in order to further devalue the credit, then it’s really sticking it to the customer.

Until 2020 Hilton Garden Inn (HGI) was alongside Hampton Inn when it came to consistency across the brand. That was an achievement since HGI offers more services than Hampton. However, 'brand standards' - for all brands - are given little more than a nod these days for three main reasons: 1) supply chain problems; 2) staff shortages and 3) cost cutting.

Hotels (along with just about every business - especially those that use perishable goods) are having major problems getting the food they need when they need it. So hotels are improvising and are charging what they must to deal with this. Some of the price increase will outlast the supply issues.

The worst bottleneck for hotels general, not just where food is concerned, is staffing. Some US regions are losing staff more quickly than they can bring on new people. The people kept on through the pandemic (often hotels best or longest serving people) are burned out. Outside of primarily business destinations, they are trying to handle near 100% occupancy with 20% of their staff members. The number simply walking away is huge and growing.

Chris Nassetta promised owners that Hilton will make their properties 35% more profitable post-pandemic. He can't get there solely by axing daily housekeeping at non-luxury brands, especially since to keep and attract people (especially in the face of rampant headhunting by competitors) hotels are having to raise pay and offer more hours. The change to a food and beverage credit instead of breakfast is part of this.

HGI's brand office has had nothing to say about any of this mainly because there is nothing they can say. Ownership and management companies are in the driver's seat more than ever.

I stayed at the Doubletree Los Angeles Downtown location last week for a night. Check-in agent told me in advance about the $15 credit and where it could be used (lounge for drinks in the evening or limited snacks/drinks in the pantry next to check-in). The restaurant was still closed, so no breakfast available to be able to use it on. I ended up forgetting about the credit since there was no place I could grab breakfast in the hotel in the morning.

Despite the fact that several employees of the property have confirmed with me verbally that they were participating during my stay.
So to update my own situation - the DT property that I stayed at must have someone reading these boards because they contacted me regarding my "comments on social media" and wanted to discuss. Mostly it was a waste of time on the phone but, in the end, they offered me a "courtesy credit" of $90 which covers a little more than half of my F&B expenses. I declined since I'm not interested in half of a benefit...plus the AmEx dispute has started so I don't want to interfere with that.

The property is also still claiming that the max credit is per calendar day so late dinner/drinks not charged to the room until after the bar closes at Midnight and breakfast the next morning are billed to the room on the same calendar day and only eligible for the max $15 credit for the Boston area.

They seem to have forgotten that they were arguing that their property wasn't participating in the credits at the time of my stay. It's honestly all so confusing at this point!

I'm 5 nights from re-qualifying for Diamond but switched an upcoming 7-night stay over to Marriott so I can hit Platinum 75 with them. Hilton will be my "standby" hotel from now on...only used if another chain isn't available.

If you have a drink at 9pm (or even 12:01am) and breakfast the next morning, those should be treated as the same “day.” It’s just that a “day” for the benefit is not a calendar day. (We know this because you don’t get two separate credits for a one-night stay spanning two calendar days.)

What does "not participating" mean? Do you mean that they are operating under the prior benefit level (free continental/buffet/cooked-to-order, depending on brand)? Or that they aren't offering ANY perks at all?

The 24 hours could run from your check in time, so if you check in at 4 p.m., your "daily" credit expires at 4 p.m. the next day, and at 4 p.m. each day thereafter.

Or it could be for one calendar day (credit expires at midnight each day).

Of course, you SHOULD get a credit for the day of check out if you want to have breakfast.

But the guidance from Hilton is as clear as mud on how that is all supposed to work.

The Hilton Garden that I’m currently staying at (HGI Virginia Beach Oceanfront) is still using breakfast certificates.

it’s also a very nice hotel with all oceanview rooms.

They have both options where I'm at but I decided to use the credits which is a pain in the butt. Everytime I buy something I have to ask them to apply the credit or they have no clue! I wish I could just buy 30 cans of beer and be done with it. But NOOO I can only buy two per day.

The Hilton FAQ says explicitly that you get one credit, not two, for a one-night stay. So “calendar day” is not the metric.

Sure, that would be two credits for one night.

But where it gets messy is if you're staying for like a week and having breakfast some days and dinner on others and maybe only hitting the pantry, or a cocktail from the poolside bar some days....

What's the cutoff for each "day"? The guidance is fuzzy on that.

That's why I think one credit for each 24 hour period beginning at the time of check in is what they need to do. That's pretty clear and not open to interpretation.

It would just be so much cleaner if you got a cumulative credit based on length of stay…stay 5 nights x $12 for 1 person, you get $60 total. Spend it how you wish. That was easy.

Nothing about this change makes any sense for the customer anyway.

It's a cut anyway you slice it and even for those who want the food and beverage credit, it's not working very well.
