How to avoid resort fees?

The only way is if you're a Diamond and say "I already get these things as Diamond benefits, would it be possible to waive the resort fee." You're completely at their mercy but it doesn't hurt to ask, just be prepared to have reasons (don't use any of these things or get them already for free). I've had fees waived for that before, but I've also been unsuccessful.
In the future, just avoid the hotel w/fees if at all possible, and let the management know you chose a different local hotel because of the fees.
