Yeah I've used it a few times in London and in Blackpool. Nobody batted an eyelid at checkin. Certainly wouldn't bother me to use it again.

I can pretend to be gay to save a few bucks.
If you type your city and dates at this web page, it will bring up eligible properties:

http://www.goout.hilton.com/

Just for fun, I tested an upcoming January Chicago stay, and April San Diego stay. In both cases the rate was pretty good if you want the free drinks - but there were better rates. For example, in Chicago the double points package was cheaper than the Go Out rate, and in SD the parking-inclusive package was cheaper. Also in SD, the MVP rate was far cheaper - so it looks like I'll go with that one to save $40, and pay the $18 parking fee.

I've got an upcoming stay in San Francisco (which would seem very LGBT friendly), and all the rates are higher (some much higher) than not using this link.

Why Hilton even offers such a rate is ludicrous, PC at its finest.
But as long as its there and cheap, book it and don't look back.

Supply and demand. In SF the gay rooms sell faster than the non-gay rooms so you see higher price buckets.

I use Tinder when I travel by myself to have some company. If I'm not getting enough responses on there, I switch to Grindr.

What is the difference between a gay and a straight room? (I know that I have never had a room hit on me, no matter what its orientation.)

It's not PC...it's just marketing. Hotels have long had romance packages and whatnot...

Personally, I find the AAA rate PC.

I do not believe in any way that it is PC motivated. It is most certainly profit motivated. In this case I think it most likely by the magazines that perhaps are paying a commission to all who book a room with this rate.

Otherwise it defies all logic, as unlike AAA, Military Rate, etc there is no "gay card" to pull out to qualify for such a rate during booking or check in.

It's not the only discounted rate that doesn't require a card. MVP and Team USA rates don't either.

I found this this "Official" gay card with just seconds of effort:
