Years ago I spent well over $200,000.00 usd at a Hilton property for a life event in two ball rooms. Sadly I did not even use a Hilton card to pay. Has anyone ever had any luck booking a large event and getting Hilton points by reserving a room? Please tell me this would not have worked.

Which returns us to the eternal debate:
Just how much is Diamond worth (relative to the already benefit-rich Gold)?
For some persective:
Per this thread, 1 night, 1 stay at $5000 can get you Diamond.
But just 0 nights, 0 stays at $95 can get you Gold!
So the cost of getting Diamond relative to getting Gold is $4990 (if it's really 10k base points, or $9990 if it's only 5k base points)! I think I"ll pass!!!
Meanwhile the cost of getting 100k points other ways can be as low as $0 (plus spending $3000 on anything you would have bought anyway).
And given that you can get top status over at Marriott for only $800 (also 0 nights and 0 stays), I'm further unimpressed iwth the cost of achieving HHonors Diamond presented in this thread.
Summary:
Cost of HHonors Gold: $95
Cost of 100k HHonors redeemable points: $0 (with $3000 spend)
Cost of Marriott Platinum: $800
Cost of HHonors Diamond: $5000

Stay at the Rome Cavalieri for New Years Eve, and get a bottle of nice champagne delivered via room service (and insist on paying), and you're good to go :
