Has anyone bought a car from Hertz?

From what I recall, hertz sells all of its rentals through its used cars business. I know that it isn't the best idea to buy a used rental car (considering how everyone treats them) BUT if it was a good enough deal, I might bite.

I'd be axious to know, as well, how Hertz accounts for the possibility that their cars have lived hard lives. I mean, are their prices lower than, say, CarMax for a comparable vehicle? If not, I think I'd not buy from Hertz.

On the positive side, Hertz takes very good care of their cars. When they reach the mileage level for maintenance, the car cannot be re-rented out until that work is done (has caught me out once or twice on a multi-back-to-back rental with a really sweet car). So, in general, while people might be "hard" on them, they are well-maintained. With a reputable aftermarket warranty, they are probably reasonably safe purchases.

I wonder who ended up with the FT Impala?

A friend of mine bought a Ford Escort about two years ago from Hertz and she seems happy with it (or as happy as one can be with an Escort) and has had no problems.

If I had to, I'd pick a car from Hertz than one from, say, Enterprise, who I also rent from. In my experience, the Enterprise cars are certainly more worn and less cared after.

After I rented it, you have to wonder about .....

Actually, I treat all rentals as if they were my very own car. I even clean out the trash as I do not keep my car this way. I do not wash the cars because this will be done upon return.

I purchased my first car from Hertz in 1985. It was a 1984 Chevy Monte Carlo with about 30,000 miles on it. It gave me ten years of reliable service.

My brother in law has a Hertz bought Ford Taurus. Runs fine several years later. But given how mean I am to my rental cars (well, I'm pretty mine to my regular cars) I don't plan to buy a Hertz rental car

Not sure if this will help anyone, but CSAA (Northern Cailfornia AAA) magazine regularly runs coupons good for a couple hundred dollars off of purchasing a Hertz vehicle.

One of my sons bought a car from Hertz (Ford Escort). IIRC, it had fairly low mileage and was in great condition. He has had absolutely no problems with it. It was a good, clean transaction.

Curious:
Is it like a used car lot... with all the haggling back and forth?
Or, are the prices fixed?

I wonder if the higher end cars (G and above) are in better shape when sold, since they sometimes seem to rest a little longer than the class Cs, Bs, Fs, etc.

On the down side, I wonder if any of the Hertz Prestige cars that require high octane gas have had anything above 87 since they left the factory... I'd bet that even Hertz puts in cheap gas when the cars need to be filled after a rental.

Most, if not all, current cars have knock sensors which will retard the spark or somesuch wizardry if you use a lower grade of gas to prevent engine damage.

So at worse, that 252hp LS V8 becomes a 232hp V8.

Though god save the Volvo's on regular unleaded. At 190hp they're already underpowered for their weight class.

I currently drive a car purchased from Hertz. It is a great vehicle. They have strict maintenance requirements and when you are looking at a car on their lot they will provide you with the complete file on the car's upkeep. And I mean complete. From brake work throught the replacement of an antena. Very please with my purchase.

As far as the "high end" cars...these are just leased from the auto maker and are returned to them for disposal once they reach certain mileage/age levels. That's why you'll never see Town Car on a Hertz lot.

Aren't the majority of cars returned to the automaker, and just a select few sold by Hertz? I know in my used car shopping I've seen many ex-Hertz cars on dealer lots.

So where DO you get 94 octane?
