Another return not processed
Returned my rental to ORD yesterday morning at ORD. Here it is 22 hours later and the return has not been processed. I've attempted to call the location but it rings a few times and disconnects. I've sent an inquiry via the "non-urgent" contact form on the website (chat wants me to wait 48 hours - yea, right). Car was selected from the PC area and just left in the return area since getting someone to process it on the spot is near impossible at ORD. Any suggestions other than just waiting to see what happens? I have video of the car in the return area and gas receipt and boarding pass saved.
One thing I'm wondering about is if the car is rented to the next customer, will that force closure of my rental? You would think that trying to send it out on a new contract would cause an error saying the car is already on an open rental. But the pace at which cars turn over at ORD, you'd think there's a good chance it's already gone back out.
I've had other problems at ORD (my usual rental location) such as being charged for gas despite returning it full and a return that was shown several hours (into the next rental day) after my return and both were corrected after some back and forth with them but still a pain.
UPDATE: Just a few minutes after posting, I did receive a receipt for the rental post-dated to the promised return time. But, they charged me $28.99 plus taxes for "Fuel and Service" so now to fight that battle.

BelmontRef , you're always going to run the risk of this happening unless you take the time to insist on a printed receipt when you return the car. And that's not only with Hertz.
Only you can decide if you prefer to run that risk, or to spend extra time waiting for a printed receipt.

For closure, I just received an email that they're refunding the "Fuel and Service" charge.
I don't disagree. Getting someone to check you in while you wait can be difficult. But something I'll do in the future unless time is tight.

Returned to DEN about 4 hours before it was due. One return customer was behind me (so site was not busy). Agent typed on his tablet seemingly longer than normal. I asked for a receipt. He said it would be e-mailed and confirmed my e-mail address. No problem.
I had 4 hours at DEN and checked my e-mail while in the lounge. Nothing. I checked the Hertz app. Vehicle still showed as unreturned (and this was two hours after it was due). Called the rep - offshore - and quite a phone/AI tree to get to her.
She stated that it was policy that returns take up to 48 hours to process to allow for inspections. In fact she could not see that the vehicle was returned. I expressed my concern, but she said she could do nothing for me.
I received a receipt about T+36 with the accurate return time. (Fortunately, I took pics of the vehicle at return.)
Is this a new practice for Hertz? I've rented from Avis and Sixt this year, albeit in Europe, and I don't recall this being an issue. I guess I'll wait for a printed receipt next time as it concerns me that a vehicle could be outside of my control for up to 48 hours.
