using ZE1 awards internationally

Hey folks,
I called today to book a car in SYD for my honeymoon next April. I called the #1 Gold club (I'm a 5 points) desk and told the woman that I wanted to look into international award travel.
she had no clue what I was talking about. She kept asking for a cupon code. I've never cashed in my Hertz Award points so I am not sure how I should have gone about it.
Finally she put me on hold and came back and told me that ZE1 codes could not be used internationally.
I've been renting for 2 years with out even thinking about cashing in points, just to save for this trip.
Do I have any luck with this? Can I call and try to beg?

Has anyone ever accomplished award travel abroad?

Thanks
-N

There's always the "call back until you get the answer you want" strategy, but I've been told this by two different Hertz phone reps.

No Luck

I tried to use my 10k+ points for Europe - no luck.

Come on Hertz - if I can't use my Hertz awards at Hertz - what's the point?

Yes it seems to be that the rewards program is for US only. I enquired in the past about earning points while renting in Europe. Interesting thing is that at first Hertz did not know, had to wait a long while, and finally was told that I would not be able to earn point on my several thousand dollar rentals in Europe. And they did not feel sorry about it.

So you can not earn Hertz points with Hertz, nor redeem Hertz awards with Hertz. Just think if airlines did it this way, they would lose many customers...

Don't forget that ZE1 points are "use them or lose them" as I found out a year ago! They expire every 24 months IIRC.

Is it true that I cannot earn ZE1 points for international rentals?

You can only earn miles internationally as far as I know.

I've earned Avis points on all of my European rentals, however, Hertz is another matter. It is the exception rather than the rule when I receive points from Hertz when I rent in Europe. BTW, I chose to earn Marriott points rather than ZE1 points because the Hertz points can't be used internationally.
